Hampton University Guidelines on Political Activities<\/p>

This policy is to provide guidance to the Hampton University (“Hampton” or the “University”) community regarding prohibited political activities. In order to ensure that political activities are not attributed to the University, all members of the Hampton community must familiarize themselves with these guidelines and conduct themselves accordingly.
Hampton is committed to the free expression of ideas and opinions by all members of its community, including views about political issues as a critical part of the higher education experience. The University is also committed to encouraging healthy participation in the political process. However, as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, Hampton must also comply with rules prohibiting participation in political campaigns. All Section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office.
Hampton must maintain its neutrality in political campaigns. All political activities must be non-partisan and have prior official administrative approval from the Office of the President.
Failure to adhere to this policy can result in penalties, including the revocation of Hampton’s tax-exempt status. Any violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment or expulsion.<\/p>

  • Prohibited Activities include, but are not limited to:<\/li>
  • Using organizational computers, phones, email, or other resources for campaign activities;<\/li>
  • Using the facilities, or any resources to support or oppose any political candidate, party, or campaign;<\/li>
  • Using Hampton’s name, seal or mark in any communication involving political activity;<\/li>
  • Faculty and staff distributing campaign materials or wearing campaign buttons, clothing, or other partisan political items while at work;<\/li>
  • Faculty and staff endorsing or opposing candidates for public office (including solicitation of campaign contributions) while at work; and<\/li>
  • Faculty and staff engaging in partisan political discussions while at work.<\/li><\/ul>

    Permissible Activities:<\/p>

    • Voter Registration: Hampton can engage in voter registration in a non-biased manner and provide non-partisan information about voting.<\/li>
    • Educational Activities: Hampton can hold forums, debates, and lectures where all candidates are invited and given equal opportunity to speak and conduct public education and training sessions about participation in the political process.<\/li>
    • Political Activities as Individuals: Students, staff and faculty members, in their individual capacities, can participate in political activities. However, they must not use Hampton’s resources or imply that the University supports or endorses their political activities. Social media posts should not be linked to an individual’s affiliation with the University and must make clear that any political statements and views expressed are those of the individual and not those of the University.<\/li>
    • Student Organizations: Student organizations may hold events and publish materials and communications expressing the students’ views on candidates for public office as long as it is clear that the views expressed are those of the students and not those of the University. The following disclaimer should be used in connection with any event, publication or communication related to a candidate for elective public office: “This [event\/publication\/communication] is sponsored solely by [name of student organization] without support or endorsement of Hampton University. Hampton University does not participate in political campaigns on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for elective public office.”<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
