The Emancipation Oak, as it stands today. This national historic landmark stood as the site of the first teachings at Hampton University on September 17, 1861, and later as the site of the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.<\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hampton University is nestled along the banks of the Virginia Peninsula, near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The surrounding city of Hampton features a wide array of business and industrial enterprises, retail and residential areas, historical sites, and miles of waterfront and beaches. Attractions such as Fort Monroe<\/a>, NASA Langley Research Center<\/a> and the Virginia Air and Space Center<\/a> add to the splendor \u2014 and just plain fun \u2014 of the HU campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
