class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Steps to Degree Completion (Graduation)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5f277d7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5f277d7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>1. \u00a0At least once each semester:<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Seek guidance from your academic advisor and the Graduate College Counselor<\/strong><\/p><p>You should meet with your academic advisor and the Graduate College Counselor at least once a semester.\u00a0 Your relationship with departmental and Graduate College faculty is an important key to your success.\u00a0 Faculty and staff contribute to the advising relationship by:<\/p><ul><li>encouraging ongoing, supportive and informed contact with students<\/li><li>explaining policies, procedures and academic requirements<\/li><li>making referrals to campus and community resources<\/li><li>and assisting with degree planning<\/li><\/ul><p>Ultimately, the responsibility for seeking adequate advisement belongs to the student.\u00a0 You must:<\/p><ul><li>know and meet degree requirements<\/li><li>ensure timely progress toward a degree through appropriate course selection<\/li><li>and be aware of current academic and departmental information<\/li><\/ul><p>Review your Academic Catalog prior to your appointment to prepare questions for your appointment.<\/p><p><strong>Update your contact information with the Registrar&#8217;s Office and the Graduate College<\/strong><\/p><p>To ensure that you are receiving information from the university and the Graduate College, update your contact information with\u00a0<strong>both<\/strong>\u00a0the Registrar&#8217;s Office and the Graduate College whenever it changes.\u00a0 Contact information includes a current and permanent address, local telephone number, and primary email address.\u00a0 A change in legal name or visa status (international students) should also prompt an update with these departments.<\/p><p><strong><br \/>2.\u00a0 Request for the Appointment of the Advisory Committee (for thesis and dissertation students only)<br \/><\/strong><br \/>For students completing a thesis or dissertation, the Request for the Appointment of the Advisory Committee form should be filed by the student prior to becoming a candidate for the degree (candidacy).\u00a0 Each member of the committee must sign the form and have curriculum vitae on file with the Graduate College.\u00a0 Once the Graduate College approves the advisory committee, notice will be sent to the student, committee members, Program Coordinator, and the School Dean.<\/p><p>The Graduate College keeps a copy of approved committee members on file.\u00a0 The student should request a current data from new faculty members or faculty members outside of Hampton University who serve on an advisory committee and submit the vitae with the Request for the Appointment of the Advisory Committee form.<\/p><p>If any changes to to the committee are made after the form is submitted to the Graduate College, the student must submit a new form complete with signatures of all the committee members.<\/p><p>For further details, please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/gradcoll\/theses-dissertations\">Thesis and Dissertation page.<\/a><\/p><p><strong>3. At least one semester before your expected graduation date:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Perform an audit of your degree progression.<br \/><\/strong><br \/>Make an appointment with your academic advisor and the Graduate College Counselor to perform an audit of your degree progression.\u00a0 You should meet with your advisor at least once a semester; however this is particularly critical the semester prior to graduation.\u00a0 If there are missing courses, issues with grades, or other loose ends to tie, your advisor and the Graduate College Counselor can help you identify those and possibly prevent delay of your graduation date.\u00a0 The student is ultimately responsible for seeking adequate advising.\u00a0 Review your Academic Catalog to prepare for your appointment.<\/p><p><strong>4. Apply for Admission to Candidacy for Degree Completion (Graduation Application)<\/strong><\/p><p>Admission to the Graduate College does not imply that you have been accepted as a candidate for the advanced degree. You must apply for admission to candidacy. Admission to candidacy is an important step in your progress toward a degree. It indicates that you have successfully completed a certain portion of your graduate studies, have proposed a degree plan for the completion of your program of study including a graduation date, are considered an academically capable graduate student, and are thereby viewed as worthy candidate or an advanced degree in your field of specialization.<\/p><p>Candidacy is effective the semester or term that the application is submitted and approved. <em>You must apply for admission to candidacy at least 6 months (but no more than 1 year) prior to your expected graduation date.<\/em>\u00a0The following deadlines apply:<\/p><p>May Graduation- November 1<br \/>Aug. Graduation- March 1<br \/>Dec. Graduation- June 1<\/p><p>See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/gradcoll\/important-dates-and-deadlines\/\">Important Dates for Graduate Students<\/a><\/p><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/gradcoll\/application-for-admission-to-candidacy-for-degree-completion-application-for-graduation\">Application for Admission to Candidacy for Degree Completion form<\/a>\u00a0should be completed in consultation with your advisor. You must meet the following requirements in order to apply for admission to candidacy:<\/p><ul><li>Satisfied all admissions requirements, including the English proficiency requirement<\/li><li>Completed required coursework totaling a minimum of nine (9)<\/li><li>Have an overall grade point average of 3.0<\/li><li>Removed any &#8220;Incomplete&#8221; coursework (excluding research and thesis\/dissertation courses)<\/li><li>Completed all core courses (doctoral candidates only)<\/li><li>Passed the Doctoral Qualifying Examination (doctoral candidates only)<\/li><\/ul><p><em>It is the primary responsibility of the student to be familiar with the policies, regulations, and deadlines governing admission to candidacy.<\/em><em>\u00a0Refer to your catalog for more information regarding candidacy.<\/em><\/p><p><strong>Pre-Register for the Thesis\/Dissertation Research or Continuation course (Master&#8217;s Plan A\/Doctoral Students)<br \/><\/strong>You\u00a0<em>must be enrolled during the semester for which you plan to graduate.<\/em>\u00a0If you are completing your thesis or dissertation and are finished with all required coursework, you must enroll in a research course or thesis\/dissertation continuation course. Talk with your advisor regarding which course is appropriate for you.<\/p><p><strong><br \/>5. Pre-Register for the Comprehensive Exam (Master\u2019s Plan B Students)<br \/><\/strong><br \/>You are expected to take this examination for the first time during the semester or term in which you expect to complete all requirements for graduation. The semester prior to your expected graduation date, submit an\u00a0Application to Take the Comprehensive Examination form and pre-register for the corresponding course.\u00a0<em>You must be enrolled in the Master\u2019s Comprehensive Examination course (702)of the your major to take the exam<\/em>.<\/p><p><strong>6. \u00a0The final semester (semester of graduation)<\/strong><\/p><p>During your final semester or term you must have met the following requirements:<\/p><ul><li>Attained admission to candidacy prior to the semester or term during which the degree is to be awarded<\/li><li>Removed any &#8220;Incomplete&#8221; coursework<\/li><li>Accomplished a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0<\/li><li>Have written a satisfactory thesis or dissertation on original research conducted by the student OR; Successfully completed the appropriate Comprehensive Exam<\/li><li>Ensured all transcripts and appropriate forms for transfer credit have been submitted to the Graduate College at least one (1) month prior to the end of the graduating semester or term<\/li><li>Maintain active enrollment status during the graduating semester or term by enrolling in a course or registering for CSRT.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0If requirements for degree completion are not completed during the semester approved for graduation, the student must complete a Graduation Update\u00a0<em>(please link to the form)<\/em>\u00a0form within one week of the end of the previously approved semester or term.<\/p><p><strong>Plan A Master&#8217;s Students and Doctoral Students<br \/><\/strong>Students who need to complete a thesis or dissertation in partial fulfillment of the requirements for their degree should refer to the Thesis Manual<em>\u00a0(this should link to the Thesis Manual pdf file)<\/em>\u00a0for the preparation and submission of their manuscript<em>. Please note that prior to submitting your thesis\/dissertation, students will need to complete paperwork regarding the advisory committee and oral defense.\u00a0<\/em><strong>You must be actively enrolled to submit a thesis\/dissertation.\u00a0 <\/strong>Once the manuscript is approved, the student will follow the instructions from the Graduate College regarding the upload and binding of the manuscript through ProQuest.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/gradcoll\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2023\/08\/HU-Approved-Editors-for-Thesis-Dissertationsrev-1.pdf\">HU Approved Editors for Thesis &amp; Dissertations<\/a><\/p><p>See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/gradcoll\/important-dates-and-deadlines\/\">Important Dates for Graduate Students<\/a>\u00a0for appropriate forms and deadlines.<\/p><p><strong>Plan B Students<br \/><\/strong>Students who need to complete a Comprehensive Examination in partial fulfillment of the requirements for their degree should pre-register for the exam the semester before their final semester. During the final semester, students must be enrolled in the appropriate examination course and, if have not already done so,\u00a0<strong>apply to take the exam their final semester.<\/strong>\u00a0The deadline to submit the\u00a0Application to Take the Comprehensive Exam\u00a0is found in the<a href=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/gradcoll\/important-dates-and-deadlines\/\">\u00a0Important Dates for Graduate Students<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Note<\/strong>\u00a0: If you fail the examination you must register to take it again during the following semester or term. You will also need to complete a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/gradcoll\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/01\/Graduation-Update-Application-Fillable-BLANK-rev-62021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduation Update form<\/a>\u00a0within one week of the end of the semester . Students failing the exam the second time must get permission from the Graduate Council before they can take the exam a third time.
