The Hampton University Department of Aviation (AVN) invites nominations and applications for a full-time nine (9) month tenure track for the Aviation Management, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (AUSM) position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor beginning in August 2025. Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The School of Engineering, Architecture, and Aviation includes the Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Architecture, and Department of Aviation. The programs are all ABET, NAAB,and AABI accredited. The Department of Aviation offers four, aeronautical programs in Aviation: one Minor in Aviation Management and four Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree options. The objectives of these programs are (1) To prepare students for meaningful aviation careers within the government and aerospace industry and (2) To enable students to bring to aviation a strong sense of social awareness and responsibility to the public.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to be a Program Manager and to teach a variety of aviation and UAS courses, academic advisor for the students, University’s Student Drone Operations Team (SDOT) and other student aviation organizations, collaborate with colleagues in Hampton University (HU) and work as a critical team member with Air Traffic Control, Airport Administration, and Flight Education faculty. HU-AVN teaching load is typically 15 or more credits per semester. Applicants should also demonstrate a desire to serve the University community, conduct research, seek external funding, and evidence of enhancing their own professional development.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Master’s Degree, preferably in an aviation-related field, but candidates with significant industry experience and a master’s degree are strongly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate previous teaching experience at the university level. A candidate with experience working in the aviation industry is desired. Also desired is to hold any current Federal Aviation Administration Flight Certification, Air Traffic Certification, Certified Tower Operator (CTO), and/or radar experience, or a current Part 107 Drone License. A combination of aviation-oriented education and teaching aviation courses may be considered instead of aviation work experience. Leadership experience in aviation or education activities is desired.
