October is National Crime Prevention Month, and the Hampton University Police Department (HUPD) is reminding students, faculty, and staff that campus safety is a shared responsibility.
“Keeping Hampton University safe requires a partnership between our Police Department and the community we serve,” said Chief of Police Al Chandler. “We encourage everyone to remain aware, use the safety resources available on campus, and never hesitate to contact HUPD when something does not look or feel right.”
Hampton University provides several resources to help protect the campus community, including:
- HUPD officers and emergency dispatchers available 24 hours a day
- Blue-light emergency call boxes located throughout campus that provide direct access to HUPD
The Pirate Notification System, which provides emergency information and alerts to the University community - Anonymous reporting and the LiveSafe app for reporting suspicious activity or safety concerns
- The Student Counseling Center and Behavioral Health and Intervention Team (BHIT) for students and others who may be experiencing a crisis or need additional support
HUPD also encourages everyone to take simple preventive measures: lock vehicles and residence hall doors, secure valuables, remain aware of your surroundings, avoid leaving property unattended, and promptly report suspicious activity.
Crime prevention is about more than responding to incidents – it is about preventing them through awareness, communication, preparation, and partnership.
“We want our students to know their police officers before they ever need us during an emergency,” Chandler said. “When you see our officers around campus, say hello, ask questions, and get to know us. We are part of the Hampton family, and we are here to serve you.”
Throughout National Crime Prevention Month and all year long, HUPD encourages every Hamptonian to help protect our Home by the Sea.
Stay alert. Stay informed. Look out for one another. If you see something, say something.
