The Hampton University Jazz Performance Institute (HUJPI) is designed to provide music students with an opportunity to collaborate with other like-minded young musicians from their communities and across the United States at one of the finest historically black colleges and universities in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Featured Artists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  • Derrick Gardner<\/strong>: Director of Jazz Studies at Northwestern University and Hampton University alum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Vincent Gardner<\/strong>: Jazz at Lincoln Center Trombonist and Artistic and Education Director\/Co-Founder of Jazz Houston.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Event Highlights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • High School Jazz Band Competition<\/strong>: Featuring six high school jazz bands selected on a “first-come-first-come” basis. Bands will be judged by Derrick and Vincent Gardner with ratings of “Superior” or “Excellent.” Each band will receive a participation trophy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Workshops<\/strong>: Covering improvisation, instrumental\/vocal technique, and music business, led by the Gardner Brothers and other esteemed musicians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Performances<\/strong>: The Gardner Brothers will perform a 45-minute set for high school students on the first and second day of the event. The event will culminate in a full jazz concert by the Gardner Brothers in the prestigious Ogden Hall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
