class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Hampton University Museum displays the <em>Pen of Liberty<\/em> and the <em>Military Frock Coat<\/em> worn by Union Army Brevet Brigadier General Samuel Chapman Armstrong the founder of Hampton Normal Industrial and Agricultural Institute.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>General Armstrong was working in Hampton with the Freedman&#8217;s Bureau at the close of the Civil War. A commander of African American troops during the war and the son of an educator, he developed a strong interest in African American education. He proposed the purchase of a 120-acre farm called &#8220;Little Scotland,&#8221; located on the Hampton River near the area where Mary Peake had taught. In 1868, General Armstrong became the first principal of Hampton Normal and Agricultural School and he guided it for the school&#8217;s first twenty-five years until his death in 1893.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Emancipation did not happen simultaneously in the United States and its territories. It came to different regions at different times. Hampton University successfully acquired one of three pens of identical construction which President Abraham Lincoln used in 1862 and 1863 to sign the three proclamations which emancipated enslaved African Americans. The <i>Pen of Liberty<\/i> although very simple in construction is a symbol of the strength and tenacity not only of the founder of Hampton but for the generations of graduates from this university and the members of the surrounding community.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8ec7641 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8ec7641\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-cc30668\" data-id=\"cc30668\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b8bee6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4b8bee6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">HAMPTON HISTORY GALLERY<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0d06e4d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0d06e4d\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ce0c52e\" data-id=\"ce0c52e\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f4f96bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f4f96bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Hampton History Gallery is utilized as a changing space to exhibit small exhibitions highlighting the history of the school.\u00a0 Exhibits have focused on aspects of Hampton\u2019s history like the Trade School; the history of the Nursing programs and even an updated version of The Curiosity Room.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b><i>The Pen of Liberty<\/i><\/b><\/p><p>Hampton\u2019s pen is one of three pens of identical construction which President Abraham Lincoln used in 1862 and 1863 to sign the three proclamations which emancipated enslaved African Americans.\u00a0 This pen was used to sign the first of these three pieces of legislation.<\/p><p>On April 16, 1862, President Lincoln signed the first document, \u201cAn Act for the Release of certain Persons held to service, or labor in the District of Columbia\u201d which declared the slaves of Washington, D. C. free.\u00a0 The second pen was used on June 19, 1862, when Lincoln signed a document to free the slaves in the territories of the United States (Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico).\u00a0 The final Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863. Emancipation Oak, located on the edge of Hampton University\u2019s campus, was the site in 1863 of the historic reading of the Emancipation Proclamation for the people of Hampton.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Indian Table<\/b><\/p><p>In February 1879, in order to fulfill its obligation to the government to provide Indian students with skills to earn a living, the school opened an \u201cIndian training shop\u201d in the basement of Marquand Cottage.
