id=\"caption-attachment-11656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry Ossawa Tanner<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Before Henry Ossawa Tanner became world-famous for his incredible religious paintings that often incorporated dramatic glowing light, he was outdoors painting nature scenes. These early paintings deserve way more attention than they get. Two of these early pieces, <em>Fauna<\/em> and <em>Flora<\/em>, give us a glimpse of Tanner&#8217;s future creations to come. They are remarkable when you think about the fact that he was just beginning his journey as an artist.<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_11663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11663\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"wp-image-11663 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/home.hamptonu.edu\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2026\/03\/fauna.png?resize=528%2C630&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/home.hamptonu.edu\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2026\/03\/fauna.png?w=671&amp;ssl=1 671w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/home.hamptonu.edu\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2026\/03\/fauna.png?resize=231%2C275&amp;ssl=1 231w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/home.hamptonu.edu\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2026\/03\/fauna.png?resize=528%2C630&amp;ssl=1 528w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Fauna, 1878 \u2013 79, oil on canvas<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure><p><em>Fauna<\/em> is the first time we know of Tanner painting animals. By this point, he\u2019d gotten confident with his brush, and he was really trying to make his mark as an animal and landscape painter. What\u2019s remarkable about this piece is how peaceful it feels. The deer and their surroundings are just completely in sync with each other. You can tell it\u2019s an early work because the brushstrokes are a little stiff and the anatomy isn\u2019t quite perfect, but honestly, that is part of what makes it interesting.<\/p><p>What really stands out about this painting is the light. Even this early in his career, Tanner was obsessed with how light works. He used rich browns and greens from the forest floor to create this soft reflected glow that later in his career became his trademark. When you look at <em>Fauna<\/em>, you feel like you\u2019re right there in the woods. Everything\u2019s quiet and you\u2019re just observing the world in its natural state. In this painting Tanner works out his whole approach to light, tone and atmosphere. Tanner creates massive trees that make you feel small, mossy rocks with crazy texture and a dramatic dance between shadows and sunlight breaking through canopy. It\u2019s less about creatures and more about the raw power and beauty of the landscape itself.<\/p><p>Tanner painted these two paintings while convalescing in the Adirondack Mountains. The mountains gave him peace and clearly a ton of inspiration. While the titles don\u2019t name any specific place, you can feel that rugged northeastern wilderness in every brushstroke.<\/p><p>These two paintings capture an important moment in Tanner\u2019s career. Tanner is a young black American artist finding his voice, experimenting with his style and developing the techniques that would eventually make him internationally celebrated. He received instruction that emphasized classical painting, portraiture painting, figure drawing and the use of color in painting.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div><div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><p>Like many Black artists of the time, he left for Europe (1926) to seek his fortune. There, he was exposed to the modernist movement. Breaking with tradition, he began to experiment with color and form in new ways that surpassed his classical training. They married in 1930 and spent much of the 1930s living in Scandinavia. While there, Johnson became interested in folk-art, in part, because of his exposure to Krake\u2019s philosophy of folk-art and culture.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>With war looming over the European continent, Johnson moved back to New York City with his wife in 1938. Upon returning to America, his focus became African American culture. He painted Black life scenes from the urban North to the rural South, often alluding to the Great Migration experience. His subjects included working class people as well as noted historical figures.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>At this time, Johnson\u2019s paintings took a dramatic shift toward a folk-art style. He started to utilize simpler contours and flat planes of color. The style was figurative, and Johnson described it as \u201cprimitive.\u201d His style shift perplexed many, since it embodied a simplification of style. His paintings were criticized as being crude, and childlike in style. Courtesy of MoMA.<\/figcaption><\/figure><div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u00a0<\/div><div><p>In 1943, at the height of World War II and a time when racial segregation permeated nearly every aspect of American society, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City staged an unprecedented exhibition.<\/p><p>\u201cThe work of the students at Hampton Institute is a healthy and promising example of the creative potentiality of the American Negro,\u201d said Victor D&#8217;Amico, Director of MoMA&#8217;s Educational Program at the time.<\/p><p>Titled <em>Young Negro Art<\/em>, this exhibition exclusively showcased the works of students from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). It was a groundbreaking moment, not only for the young artists whose works hung on the walls of one of the world&#8217;s most prestigious museums but also for the broader recognition of Black artistic expression in a field that had long marginalized their voices.<\/p><p>At the center of this revolution was Viktor Lowenfeld, an Austrian Jewish art educator who had fled Europe during the Holocaust and joined Hampton\u2019s faculty in 1939.<\/p><p>Lowenfeld brought with him a philosophy that placed deep value on self-expression, cultural heritage and the psychological impact of art. Unlike many art educators of his time, he recognized the unique artistic language of his Black students, encouraging them to draw from their lived experiences, traditions, and ancestral roots.<\/p><p>\u201cAlmost all of them, when they attempted to draw, drew white persons and not Negro features,\u201d said Lowenfeld of new art students at Hampton when speaking on how he approaches teaching.<\/p><p>Under his guidance, Hampton&#8217;s art department became a nurturing space where students could explore their identities and redefine the narrative of Black creativity.<\/p><p>Among the students profoundly shaped by this environment was Dr. John T. Biggers, who would go on to become one of the most significant muralists of the 20th century. However, in 1943, he was still an emerging artist, refining his craft and discovering the power of visual storytelling.<\/p><div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div><p>Dr. Biggers had more works in the show than any other student \u2014 12 works total \u2014 and was regarded as \u201cperhaps the most talented\u201d out of all the students in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/momaorg\/shared\/pdfs\/docs\/press_archives\/904\/releases\/MOMA_1943_0056_1943-10-04_431004-53.pdf\">press release<\/a> from MoMA regarding the exhibition.<\/p><p>A mural that received mixed reviews was <em>The Dying Soldier<\/em>: a piece that covered themes surrounding involuntary military service.<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_10507\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10507\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"wp-image-10507 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/home.hamptonu.edu\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2025\/04\/biggers_john2.jpg?resize=280%2C222&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"222\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Biggers painting his mural, Dying Soldier (1942). Biggers\u2019 picture, the less said is the better\u201d said an art critic from Art News about the mural. Today, the location of <em>Dying Soldier<\/em> is unknown, and the piece has not been on view to the public since 1957 in Chicago.<\/p><p>The exhibition also included pieces by Annabelle Baker, John Bean, Joseph Mack, Alfred Martin, Junius Redwood, George Spencer, and Frank Steward.<\/p><p><em>Night Scene<\/em>, an oil painting by Redwood, was acquired by MoMA, \u201cThe subtle opposition of round figures and sack to the stern horizontals of the cart, the deft balance of brand highlights, the freshness of color \u2014 these are qualities which artists of far longer training might envy,\u201d said of the painting in the Museum bulletin.<\/p><p>Unfortunately, Redwood could not attend the exhibition because he had been drafted into the navy.<\/p><p>The MoMA exhibition was a watershed moment for Biggers and his peers. It was an acknowledgment that their work \u2014 rooted in African American life, spirituality, and resilience \u2014 deserved a place on the national stage.<\/p><p>The inclusion of an exhibition exclusively featuring Black student artists from an HBCU in one of the world\u2019s foremost modern art institutions was nothing short of revolutionary. At a time when Black artists were systematically excluded from major galleries and museums, MoMA\u2019s decision to present <em>Young Negro Art<\/em> signaled a shift, however incremental, toward recognizing the artistic contributions of Black Americans.<\/p><p>For Hampton\u2019s students, the exhibition was more than just a moment of recognition \u2014 it was a validation of their artistic vision and cultural identity. In a society that often sought to suppress Black expression, MoMA provided a platform where their voices could be seen and heard.<\/p><p>The significance of this cannot be overstated: these young artists were asserting their place in the canon of American art at a time when few institutions were willing to acknowledge their brilliance.<\/p><p>The student exhibition ran from October 6 through November 28 in 1943. Eighty years later, the legacy of <em>Young Negro Art<\/em> continues to resonate. The exhibition laid the groundwork for future generations of Black artists, curators, and scholars who continue to challenge the boundaries of representation in the art world. It also serves as a testament to the transformative power of historically Black colleges and universities in fostering artistic excellence.<\/p><p>As contemporary institutions grapple with issues of diversity and inclusion in the arts, the story of the 1943 MoMA exhibition remains a vital reminder: Black artists have always been here, creating, innovating, and shaping culture \u2014 long before the art world was ready to recognize them.<\/p><p>Now, the Hampton Museum is further highlighting and honoring Black American art history through an exhibition celebrating Dr. Biggers: <em>John T.
