This prestigious designation places Hampton among an elite cohort of 139 institutions nationwide that meet the rigorous benchmarks of at least $5 million in annual research expenditures and the awarding of 20 or more research doctorates each year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This achievement marks a pivotal moment in Hampton\u2019s ongoing commitment to expanding research opportunities, driving innovation, and advancing student success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the 101 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States, only 13 hold a Research 2 designation, reinforcing the rarity and prestige of this classification. Achieving Research 2 status is a key pillar of \u201cElevating Hampton Excellence,\u201d the university\u2019s 10-year strategic plan, which prioritizes research growth, academic excellence, and institutional advancement.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a transformative, defining moment for Hampton University,\u201d said University President Darrell K. Williams. \u201cAchieving Research 2 status reflects our unwavering dedication to academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and the expansion of opportunities for our students and faculty. This milestone strengthens our position among the nation\u2019s leading research institutions and enhances our ability to make a meaningful impact through scholarship and discovery.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Research 2 Matters&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Research-2-1-630x630.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22106\" style=\"width:428px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Carnegie Classification system ranks research institutions based on the volume and breadth of their research activity. The Research 2 designation signals Hampton\u2019s growing research enterprise, increasing its eligibility for competitive federal grants, attracting top-tier faculty, and providing students with greater access to hands-on research opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This achievement is particularly significant within the HBCU community, where research funding and institutional classifications play a key role in fostering innovation and advancing social and economic progress.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hampton\u2019s elevation to Research 2 is a vital step toward increasing the presence of Black institutions in high-level research categories.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HBCUs account for three percent of U.S. colleges and universities but produce 25 percent of Black STEM graduates, highlighting their essential role in diversifying research fields. Hampton\u2019s Research 2 designation strengthens its ability to shape the next generation of Black researchers, scientists, and scholars.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Growing Research Enterprise&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hampton University\u2019s elevation to Research 2 status is the result of strategic investments in research, faculty development, and institutional infrastructure\u2014all priorities of the \u201cElevating Hampton Excellence\u201d strategic plan.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few years, Hampton University\u2019s research funding and awards have significantly increased, now exceeding $30 million. The university\u2019s research initiatives span critical fields, including cancer treatment, climate science, cybersecurity, AI\/ML, semiconductors and social sciences, contributing to global knowledge and solutions for real-world challenges.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis designation highlights the tremendous progress Hampton has made in research and innovation,\u201d said Dr. Neelam Azad, vice president for research. \u201cOur faculty and students are engaged in groundbreaking research with real-world impact. Achieving Research 2 status is a significant breakthrough that not only expands our research capacity but also enhances our ability to secure funding and drive transformative advancements in critical fields of study.
