{"id":4888,"date":"2025-06-06T18:44:05","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T18:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/research\/?p=4888"},"modified":"2025-10-06T18:44:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T18:44:28","slug":"hampton-university-launches-workforce-development-enterprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/research\/2025\/06\/06\/hampton-university-launches-workforce-development-enterprise\/","title":{"rendered":"Hampton University Launches Workforce Development Enterprise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Returning to Its Roots, Reimagining the Future of Work, Powering Virginia\u2019s Economic Growth<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hampton, VA<\/strong> (August 12, 2025)\u2013 With the nation\u2019s unemployment rate at 4.2 percent and employers facing a critical shortage of skilled workers, Hampton University has launched a bold new initiative to close the gap: the Workforce Development Enterprise, a $2.2 million investment in vocational training, industry-aligned certification, and entrepreneurial development.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/WD-hero-image-1-860x484.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23994\" style=\"width:369px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This forward-looking program is grounded in Hampton\u2019s founding legacy \u2013 preparing students for lives of purpose through practical training \u2013 while designed to meet the demands of today\u2019s job market and tomorrow\u2019s economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative was made possible by a $2 million federal grant secured by Congressman Robert C. \u201cBobby\u201d Scott (VA-03), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday August 6, university leaders and elected officials gathered to unveil three workforce centers:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Community Health and Vocational Center (Butler Farm Road)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Center for Culinary Arts and Business Networking (Downtown Hampton)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Downtown Hampton)<sup>th<\/sup> Floor&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these centers form a dynamic network offering hands-on training in fields such as welding, culinary arts, healthcare, small business development, and innovation-driven entrepreneurship, creating new pathways to employment in trades that are essential to the national economy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor more than 150 years, Hampton University has been a cornerstone of opportunity and excellence in this region. This investment ensures Hampton remains a beacon of academic achievement and a force in preparing the American workforce for the jobs of today and tomorrow,\u201d said Congressman Bobby Scott.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/WD-finished-630x630.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23992\" style=\"width:357px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Meeting the Moment<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the U.S. Department of Labor, demand for skilled workers\u2014from welders and machinists to health aides and culinary professionals\u2014continues to outpace supply. The National Center for Education Statistics also reports a sharp rise in vocational education enrollment, as Americans seek faster, more flexible pathways to employment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hampton University\u2019s Workforce Development Enterprise answers that call.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis program isn\u2019t just for students enrolled at Hampton,\u201d said President Williams. \u201cIt\u2019s for the working parent looking to upskill. It\u2019s for the veteran transitioning to civilian life. It\u2019s for the ambitious young person who may not be ready\u2014or able\u2014to take a traditional college path. Hampton is meeting them where they are and helping them rise.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Programs offered at the new centers are tailored for regional economic needs and national labor trends\u2014offering stackable credentials and certifications in high-demand fields. Instruction is immersive, experiential, and deeply rooted in real-world application.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not just teaching people to weld in a booth\u2014I\u2019m preparing them for the conditions they\u2019ll face on the job,\u201d said leading welding instructor Moi Cordell. \u201cHeat, cold, tight angles, heavy materials. This program is about making people truly job-ready.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Statewide Catalyst for Growth<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As industries across the country face a shortage of skilled tradespeople, the program serves as a blueprint for how universities can meet labor demands while remaining deeply rooted in community service.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local leaders see Hampton\u2019s enterprise as a game-changer, not only for the City of Hampton but for the Commonwealth of Virginia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis workforce enterprise will support the entire Commonwealth of Virginia,\u201d said City of Hampton Mayor Jimmy Gray. \u201cIt\u2019s good for the entire state. It connects our community with industries that are hiring now, and it plants seeds for long-term growth.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/home.hamptonu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/WD-unfinished-2-630x630.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23993\" style=\"width:354px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the most beautiful workforce development site in the Commonwealth,\u201d added Vice Mayor Steve Brown. \u201cIts picturesque Downtown Hampton location is ideal for our growing workforce. These spaces are a stunning tribute to all that Hampton has to offer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside Hampton University\u2019s Workforce Development Enterprises, students will get more than hands-on training, they get a taste of the lives they\u2019re building. In the welding lab, they\u2019ll harness fire and metal, shaping the backbone of industries that power the nation. Every spark is a step toward mastery, every weld a mark of confidence forged under real-world conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The behavioral health programs empower aspiring nurse\u2019s aides and home health aides no deliver care with skill and dignity, stepping into a profession where their hands will bring healing and their presence will offer peace.
