President Donald J. Trump expected to attend 2026 WHCA dinner, marking his first time<\/em>
accepting as sitting president.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

HAMPTON, Va<\/strong>. \u2014 Two seniors from Hampton University\u2019s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications are heading to Washington after earning one of journalism\u2019s most competitive honors. Christin Fluellen (left) and Jade Abu Bakr (right) have been named recipients of White House Correspondents\u2019 Association (WHCA) scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They will be recognized at the WHCA Annual Dinner on April 25, 2026, at the Washington Hilton, alongside journalists, broadcasters, and press leaders in American political media. This year\u2019s dinner will also mark the first time President Donald Trump is expected to attend after declining previous invitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe WHCA scholarship program is about investing in the next generation of journalists,\u201d said Steve Thomma, executive director of the WHCA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJade and Christin represent the talent and dedication needed to carry the profession forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Christine Fluellen ’26 and Jade AbuBakr ’26 will attend the WHCA annual dinner in Washington DC on April 25, 2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This year, the WHCA is awarding a record $156,000 in scholarships to 30 students nationwide. In addition to attending the dinner, recipients will participate in a pre-event program and be paired with mentors from the White House press corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Including this year\u2019s scholarship recipients, the WHCA has awarded more than $2.2 million in scholarships to over 440 students spanning 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing selected as a WHCA scholar is truly a dream come true. I\u2019m excited to build my network with journalists, professionals, and fellow students,\u201d said Fluellen. \u201cThis opportunity will help me grow as a storyteller and strengthen my commitment to advocacy through communication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited for the opportunity to connect with journalists, professionals, and fellow students,\u201d said Abu Bakr. \u201cIt\u2019s a chance for me to grow as a communicator and continue building my voice,\u201d said AbuBakr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dean Julia A. Wilson, dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications and chair of the Aldo Beckman Journalism Award, praised the WHCA for supporting students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re proud to see our students recognized in professional environments like this. These are the kinds of opportunities that allow them to connect, grow and step confidently into the industry,\u201d said Wilson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
