The Hampton University Center for Public Policy was established by visionary President, Dr. William R. Harvey, who has guided and led Hampton University to its current prominence in Higher Education and in the United States. Dr. Harvey’s vision was to create the¬†Center for Public Policy¬†to help facilitate a connection for students between classroom theory and practical application in the real-world. Moving forward into the 21st century and beyond, Dr. Harvey and his brain trust are meeting the emerging needs of the global community by expanding into a research focused institution. The¬†Center for Public Policy¬†is poised to meet the challenge by contributing publications, speakers, forums and new age social media engagement that advance the current and future ideas and trends in the public policy arena.
At its inception in 2008, leading the charge was former United States Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary, Alphonso Jackson. A nationally known policy expert, Mr. Jackson was tasked with laying the foundation and advancing theory into policy as the first Director of the Center.
Currently setting the agenda is Kelly Harvey-Viney, who is poised to move the Center for Public Policy into an interactive, research and statistics driven facility. A place where students, scholars, community groups and the like, gather to share ideas and find research and resources that shape and influence public policy in their own scholarly pursuits, communities and beyond. Dr. Harvey-Viney has a B.A. in English from Spelman College, and earned an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park. After working as a television journalist for 12 years, she went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Law.
The Center for Public Policy is a place¬†where policy matters. We invite national and global leaders to visit Hampton University to help foster ideas and shape policy relevant to today’s national and global environment.
