The URISE Program Steering Committee will then select 4 applicants to participate in the URISE Scholars program based on the criteria below:<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd0e319 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fd0e319\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">Strong commitment to matriculation into either a Ph.D. or MD\/Ph.D. program in biomedical sciences upon completion of the Bachelor&#8217;s degree and a strong commitment to a research career in biomedical sciences.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">Participation and completion of the pre-URISE program and curriculum.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">U.S. citizen, noncitizen national, or permanent resident.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">Full-time sophomore with a major in biology, biochemistry, mathematics, or chemical engineering.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">Overall GPA of at least 3.0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">Submission of two strong letters of recommendation.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"elementToProof\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.7em;font-weight: bold;color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\">Research<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>All URISE Scholars \/ Pre-URISE and Affiliates will:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Participate in two 10-week summer research experiences, at approved URISE extramural research institutions, beginning in the summer following the sophomore academic year.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct mentored research for 8-10 hours per week with an approved intramural\/extramural URISE research mentor during the junior academic year.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"elementToProof\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.7em;font-weight: bold;color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\">Academics<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>All URISE Scholars \/ Pre-URISE and Affiliates will:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Complete the requirements for graduation with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in years.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for the duration of participation in the program.<\/li>\n<li>Meet with their assigned URISE faculty advisor at least once a month to discuss progress through the curriculum and share any concerns; meet with the URISE Director at least once a semester.<\/li>\n<li>Successfully complete all courses and workshops required in the URISE program curriculum.<br><ul class=\"bullet\">\n<li>BIO 105 (Intro to Biology or higher Biology);<\/li>\n<li>CHE 201-202 (General Chemistry);<\/li>\n<li>CHE301\/302 (Organic Chemistry);<\/li>\n<li>MAT130 or MAT151\/152 (Calculus);<\/li>\n<li>BIO 311 (Biotechnology Exploration);<\/li>\n<li>Statistics course CSC 395, MAT 205, MAT 305, MAT 312, ESC 301-Biometry or PHA 332-Biostatistics or equivalent).<\/li>\n<li>BIO 425 (URISE Research Seminar)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other URISE Requirements:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Participate in the Responsible Conduct of Research Seminar or course<\/li>\n<li>Participate in interactive instruction in methods for enhancing reproducibility (IMER)<\/li>\n<li>Participate in the URISE Journal Club in the Department of Biological Sciences during both their junior and senior years.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complete these two capstone activities below during the senior year:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Write a senior thesis based on either the academic year or summer research and orally defend it in the BIO 425 &#8211; URISE research seminar.<\/li>\n<li>Work as a teaching assistant for one semester in one of the special sections of URISE-funded laboratories.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"elementToProof\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.7em;font-weight: bold;color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\">Other Activities<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>All URISE Scholars \/ Pre-URISE and Affiliates will:<\/strong><\/p><ol>\n<li>Apply to at least five biomedical-related Ph.D. (or MD\/Ph.D.) programs at competitive, research-intensive universities by no later than the fall of the senior year. Submit proof of application to Drs.
