Program Layout
The Hampton University Workforce Development and Allied Health Services Department offers a HVAC/R Technology A.A.S. program as well as a certificate program to our current list of offerings. The Certificate Courses consists of classroom lecture and hands on lab instruction, given over the course of 6-13 weeks. Upon satisfying the requirements for each HVAC/R course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from Hampton University and earn credentials from each course from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and the EPA-608 Universal certification.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Includes an introduction to basic Safety, introduction to construction math, introduction to hand tools, introduction to power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging, basic communication skills, and basic employability skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Includes an introduction to HVAC, trade mathematics, copper and plastic piping and basic carbon steel piping practices, soldering and brazing, ferrous metal piping practices, basic electricity, introduction to cooling, introduction to heating, air distribution systems.

HVAC Level 2 Certificate Course
CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS: 15

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course designed to teach students the knowledge and skills needed to work in the HVAC industry. Students will learn industry terminology, proper use of tools and test instruments, and other techniques designed to make students more employable. Upon completion of the course, students should have the skills to assemble and install duct work including properly sealing and insulating ducts, install refrigerant line sets using proper brazing procedures, install properly graded drain lines, connect high and low voltage wiring, install a thermostat, perform evacuation and start up procedures, use a recovery machine to remove refrigerant, use a voltmeter, and use a manifold gauge set and digital thermometer to check suction pressure, head pressure, superheat, and sub-cooling.

Students will learn about Fasteners, Hardware and Wiring Terminations, Control Circuit and Motor Troubleshooting, Troubleshooting Cooling, Troubleshooting Heat Pumps, Troubleshooting Gas Heating, Troubleshooting Oil Heating, Troubleshooting Accessories, Zoning, Ductless, and Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems, Commercial Hydronic Systems, Steam Systems, Retail Refrigeration Systems, and Customer Relations.
