Group visits provide young learners with a meaningful introduction to the Hampton University Museum’s s rich environment. Age-appropriate activities and sensory-focused experiences foster an early appreciation for art and self-expression while supporting classroom learning.

Elementary, Middle, and High School programs are available.

Grades K through 8th grades Offerings for students at these grade levels provide an introduction to the Museum’s collection of art and artifacts in proper cultural and historical context and explore the relationship between form and meaning.

High School programs are structured to facilitate in-depth exploration of the Museum’s collection. The Museum’s Department of Education offers guided tours in conjunction with the SOL’s.

AP High School workshops are also offered.

2 & 3 year olds: The Curiosity Room offers Toddlers playful music and movement activities, an interactive story, a short gallery walk, and a process-based art project presented by volunteers from the Greater Williamsburg Women’s Association.

4 & 5 year olds: The Curiosity Room offers Preschoolers’ natural curiosity and sense of wonder by experiencing an exploratory introduction, an interactive gallery tour, and a hands-on art project presented by volunteers from the Greater Williamsburg Women’s Association.

Donations are welcome. A maximum of 20 children and 5 adults can be accommodated. Minimum of 10 children per visit. Each visit lasts 45 minutes and focuses on a theme selected by the Greater Williamsburg Women’s Association.

Self-Guided Tour for Senior/Adult Groups. No charge, but donations suggested. A warm welcome and brief orientation to the Museum.

Highlights of the Museum tour (30 people maximum. 1 hour); the museum is free and open to the public, donations are encouraged. A guided tour through the Museum galleries, briefly touching on important people, art and artifacts from the Hampton University Museum collection.  The special changing exhibition is included as a part of the tour. Guests may request a historic walking tour depending on the weather. After the guided tour, patrons are welcomed and encouraged to explore the galleries at their own pace and to visit the Museum Gift Shop.  These tours are tailored to your group’s special interests and needs.

Artists and scholars are invited throughout the year to the Hampton University Museum for lectures, gallery talks and symposia on a diverse range of topics. Regular programs include the Director’s Tea and the Director’s Chat. The Museum also hosts a number of opening receptions and the Annual Holiday and Kwanzaa Marketplace.
Tree House is a children’s membership program that was developed to expand Friends of the Museum and enhance family visits. Geared toward children between the ages of 4 and 14, Tree House is rooted with a strong educational component that emphasizes the Museum’s collection through workshops, specialized programs, such as the 2019 Commemoration themes.
