Save America’s Treasures: The Samuel Chapman Armstrong Letter Books

Project Description:

Hampton University Archives will use the funds to conserve and digitize the letter

books of Samuel Chapman Armstrong, a Union Army general who served as the

first president of the school, as well as two on-site workshops to assist in

developing a plan for digital preservation. The letter books provide insight into

educational experiences of African Americans and Native Americans during

Reconstruction and include Chapman’s handwritten and typed correspondence

regarding the establishment of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, as it

was known in 1868, its educational design, and administration. The project will be

matched with $249,898 in non-federal share.
