Greetings Colleagues/Staff/Students,
The Department of Psychology under the helm of the School of Liberal Arts & Education is hosting its Inaugural, “Black Decolonial Psychology Conference” right here on campus from January 26th-27th, 2024.
We know all too well from history and recent events that Black folk across the diaspora have and continue to be traumatized in multiple contexts. The research is clear that this current and inter-general trauma has such a neuro-psycho-relational-spiritual impact and can make it hard to know who to trust or where one can go for love and understanding. Given the constant and complex psycho-cultural risk factors Black folk across the diaspora endure, safe spaces of reassurance and care, like our conference continue to be needed. Our conference is meant to be a space of reconciliation and a space of gentle but explicit reassurance sprinkled with pragmatic theories/paradigms and skills (i.e., for lay persons, students, and clinicians/educators) that can assist our participants in obtaining psycho-cultural-spiritual liberation.
Our interactive workshop facilitators (Dr. Steven Kniffley, an African Psychologist, Board certified Clinical Psychologist, Creator of the Kniffley Racial Trauma Therapy Model & the Senior Associate Dean at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Associate Professor within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience; Dr. Shena Young, Licensed Psychologist and Embodied Trauma Therapist/Expert & Yoruba Healer) are world are renowned and dedicated to the psycho-cultural-spiritual healing of Black folk across the diaspora. There will also be a drumming ceremony and panel with panelists sharing, from both their expertise and souls. And to top it off, Dr. Ivory I. Toldson (National Director of Education Innovation & Research, NAACP & Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Negro Education, Howard University) will be our Keynote Speaker for our Black Psychologists Wall of Fame Ceremony.
You don’t want to miss it! This conference will assist our conference attendees to understand the impacts of multiple level traumas, reconcile their selfhood, and begin and/or continue living their lives out loud and authentically.
