Hampton University Museum and the Chrysler Museum of Art Launches New Joint Site for Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship!

In partnership with the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Hampton University Museum has launched an exciting new website that will document the Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial and Conservation Fellows’ work during the three-year pilot program. The site will allow the Fellows to share their journey and educate while they examine Hampton University Museum’s Harmon Foundation Modern African Art and the Chrysler Museum of Art’s traditional African collections. From discussing common themes in the artwork to exploring ways to conserve a treasured collection, viewers will be able to learn more about the importance of curatorial and conservation work in the museum field.

Holiday Greetings from the Armstrong School for the Arts!

Armstrong School for the Arts is celebrating 100 years, 1921 – 2021.  Armstrong is Hampton School District’s oldest, continuous school. The school was named in honor of the Armstrong family after the land where the school stands today was donated by the children of Col. William Nevins Armstrong, the brother of the Hampton Normal and Industrial School (now Hampton University) Brigadier General Samuel Chapman Armstrong.

Armstrong School for the Arts incorporates visual arts, music, drama, dance, and artistic writing into the four core subject areas of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Library, Art, Music, and Physical Education teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers to plan and teach hands-on art integrated lessons that enhance the Hampton City Schools curriculum. The integrated lessons have a meaningful, positive impact on student learning and achievement.

The Hampton University Museum has partnered with Armstrong School since 2010 or earlier. The students and teachers have performed in our Annual Holiday and Kwanzaa Marketplace as well as visiting the Hampton University Museum and the Children’s Curiosity Room. The Museum’s educator has also visited the school offering engaging programs.

Enjoy the holiday music by Armstrong School for the Arts 5th graders, directed by chorus director, Jennifer Thompson. A special thank you to Principal Millicent Rogers and Mrs. Michelle Bowers and MOST OF ALL, THOSE AWESOME 5TH GRADERS.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE HAMPTON UNIVERSITY MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES FAMILY
