Assistant/Associate Professor of Physics

The Hampton University Physics Department seeks an experimental plasma physicist for appointment to a tenure track faculty position. The successful candidate will assume leadership of a new initiative to build a lab-scale stellarator experiment (Project STAR_Lite) and establish an active research and education program around the machine. STAR_Lite is funded by the U. S. Dept. of Energy and The Simons Foundation and built in collaboration with the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

Job Duties:

The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate level courses in physics to support the department’s B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree offerings. The person will establish an active, externally funded, plasma physics research group supporting both graduate and undergraduate students. Additionally, there is the expectation of university committee service and engagement in service to the larger physics professional community.  Faculty member will also perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

The selected candidate will hold a doctorate in experimental plasma physics from an accredited university. Preference will be given to persons with experience building magnetic plasma confinement machines – preferably a stellarator or tokamak – or significant diagnostics for these machines.
