Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federal TRIO Program funded through the U. S. Department of Education to provide academic, career, and financial counseling to eligible middle and high school students and to encourage them to graduate from high school and pursue their post-secondary education. ETS consists of a Middle School Component that serves 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in five target schools and the High School Component that serves eligible 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders in four Hampton City High Schools. The program provides eligible students annual college tours, Financial Aid and Financial Literacy seminars, career exploration, and academic workshops. The High School Adviser provides vital college access resources for Talent Search participants and their families. In addition to workshops, Advisers are responsible for ensuring the success of a cohort of 270 students through academic advising, outreach, program recruitment, and assisting in program planning/management at assigned school sites. High School Advisers will be based at two school sites four days a week through the academic year.
COMPENSATION: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; includes comprehensive fringe benefit package. This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon the continuation of related grant funding.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Academic Coordinator is a full time, 12 month employee who reports to the Program Director and performs the following duties:
Plan, manage, and recruit eligible students into academic programs for the Educational Talent Search program.
Coordinate and implement targeted academic interventions, counseling services, and activities that assist eligible students in their adjustment to the middle and high school environment;
Assist with writing and coordinating Talent Search Newsletter.
Recruit, assign tutors, and coordinate all training for the tutorial program; Evaluate monthly progress reports submitted by tutors, and review academic progress with tutees as warranted;
Coordinate and manage SAT & ACT Prep program for high schools students; ensuring attendance and participation in at least 3 classes during the academic year;
Lead planning and programming for the Talent Search Parent Academy;
Maintain electronic records of all tutoring sessions and review feedback reports to ensure timely intervention as necessary;
Regularly monitor participants’ academic progress, program attendance, and plan project activities including coordinating college tours and Saturday experiences;
Make presentations to student groups and help students apply for admission and secure financial aid to four year universities and/or community college, to include providing information on scholarships, grants, work study, loans, and other financial assistance programs;
Advise students on financial aid policies and deadlines, effective study skills, time management strategies, and test-taking techniques;
Supervise the Mentoring Program, and collaborate with the Program Director to maintain reports on students’ semester and annual academic performance.
Attend all Educational Talent Search staff meetings and submit reports as required.
Assist the Director with the administrative responsibilities required to effectively manage the program.
All other duties as assigned.
Master’s Degree in guidance and counseling or a related discipline.
A minimum of one year of experience in counseling and administrative and supervisory experience.
Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with students from low-income, first-generation college backgrounds.
Ability to perform multiple responsibilities simultaneously, to work in a self-directed environment, and to plan and organize on both a daily and long-term basis.
Available to work evenings and weekends for events and programs (scheduled).
Demonstrated commitment to the goals and objectives of the Talent Search program.
