The Department of Physics at Hampton University invites applications for four faculty positions at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in Medical Physics. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will have an internationally recognized research program in Medical Physics with a well-established track record of external funding, scholarly achievement, student mentorship, productive collaborations with clinicians at Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI), and commitment to inclusive excellence.
Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula, in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, non-sectarian institution of higher learning with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
The Department of Physics offers the Bachelor of Science in Physics, Master of Science in Physics, Ph.D. in Physics, and Medical Physics Programs. The Medical Physics Program at Hampton University has significant collaborative atmosphere that will support the candidate’s professional pursuits, including clinical care, research, education, and quality improvement. Hampton University’s outstanding Medical Physics program has a history of strong ties to the nearby HUPTI. The HUPTI is a cancer treatment facility, fighting cancer with what is considered the most precise form of cancer treatment to date. Proton therapy can target tumors with millimeter accuracy, sparing surrounding healthy tissue and reducing side effects. The largest of its kind in the world, HUPTI is conveniently located in Hampton, VA, the heart of the Mid-Atlantic region. The HUPTI is currently treating prostate, brain, pediatric, head and neck, breast, lung, pancreatic and other cancers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include teaching, research, external funding, publications, creative and scholarly activities, and community service. Faculty will be expected to teach both the undergraduate and graduate lecture and research courses as assigned. Additionally, faculty must prepare and/or maintain current course syllabi and outlines; develop course expectations; sustain expertise in specialty areas in teaching, research, and professional development; advise and register assigned students; participate in recruitment and retention activities; keep accurate academic/student records; and obtain the accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP). Faculty members are expected to conduct and utilize research for the integration and discovery of knowledge. They are also expected to represent the University, the School of Science, and the Department of Physics when participating in professional organizations, meetings and conferences, and community activities.
Qualifications
Successful candidates should have a Ph.D. in Medical Physics and/or a Professional Doctor of Medical Physics (DMP) from the CAMPEP accredited institution, and must have the strong commitment to obtain and sustain the accreditations from both CAMPEP and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Qualified candidates must be board certified or board eligible (minimum ABR certification in progress) in Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP). The candidate must have innovative teaching skills and sufficient teaching experience; visionary, marketable, and student-demanded research areas with a proven record of high-tier journal publications; strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education; external funding experience; and clinical diagnostic and therapeutic experiences. The internal and external reviews will include the reviewers from the CAMPEP accredited institution and CAMPEP consultants. The starting date of this position is August 2024.
