The Hampton University School of Engineering, Architecture and Aviation (SEAA) invites nominations and applications of highly qualified candidates for the Chairperson position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Aviation.  Please note that tenure-track positions are offered at the discretion of the University conditional upon expertise, credentials, and qualifications of the successful candidate(s).   The anticipated start is August 2024.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, non-sectarian institution of higher learning with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia. The School of Engineering, Architecture and Aviation (SEAA) includes the Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Architecture, and Department of Aviation. The programs are ABET, NAAB, and AABI accredited.

The Department of Aviation offers three Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree options: Aviation Management, Air Traffic Control or Airport Administration and Flight Education.  The objectives of the programs are (1) to prepare students for meaningful aviation careers within the government and aerospace industry and (2) to enable students to bring to aviation a strong sense of social awareness and responsibility to the public.  The department also provide aviation curriculum and student advisement to Hampton University Online, Aviation Management, Airport Administration 2-year B.S. Cohort program.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate must be committed to managing the growth and development of the Department of Aviation. They should also be committed to teaching, advisement of students, leading faculty, and collaborating on various research initiatives. Specific responsibilities will include oversight of the faculty through consistent observation and evaluation of teaching effectiveness and the work of the department such as development of the short and long-range plans for the academic unit, assurance of the quality and coordination of instruction, preparation of annual faculty and staff evaluations in the department, overseeing the recruitment of students, preparation of a budget for the expenditure of departmental funds, acquisition of external funding from grant sources and conducting research projects through personal initiative. 

The candidate will be expected to work with the Dean, the Assistant Dean, and/or other faculty members to initiate and encourage national collaborations that enhance to the growth of the Department of Aviation.

Primary teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in the Aviation Management – Airport Administration program. The successful candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills and must be committed to the continuous improvement process and the outcome-based assessment of the programs. Preference will be given to candidates who have one or more of the following qualifications; (1) an aviation-related terminal degree, (2) recent experience in the airport operations industry or an aviation academic setting, (3) experience with Part 139 Airport Operations Certification requirements.

Additional responsibilities for this position include:

  • Monitoring overall student progress
  • Serving as faculty advisor for student organizations
  • Developing and fostering aviation industry connections
  • Participating in recruitment events
  • Serving on departmental and university related committees
  • Providing Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) leadership
  • Facilitate Alumni/Parent Town Halls and Aviation Advisory Board
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in Aviation or a related field, and a commitment to teaching excellence, service and scholarship. Appropriate airport operations, teaching experience and recent aviation industry experience are highly desirable. Airport operation credentials may include, but are not limited to, American Association of Airport Executives certification, International Air Transport Association coursework, certification, or airport operations on-the-job training.

The Chairperson of the Department of Aviation serves as both an administrator and faculty member, and is expected to provide effective leadership in both roles; and must value diversity, especially as it pertains to the merits of a HBCU.

  • Ability to think outside of the box to achieve goals 
  • Ability to inspire students, and 
  • Can contribute to the vision of the University as a whole.
