The faculty within the Department of Psychology are committed to providing a strong academic environment to support the development of future leaders in the industry of psychology. The Department of Psychology at Hampton University, is within the School of Liberal Arts and Education (SLAE) andcurrently houses the BA in Psychology, BA in Psychology– Pre-Medical Track, BA in Psychology-Black Family Studies Track (in development), and the forthcoming MA in Psychology with a Certification in Black Family Studies/Community Psychology (relaunching). The Department seeking to fill a full-time faculty position at Assistant Professor Level beginning Spring 2024/Fall 2024. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate must be committed to teaching undergraduate courses such as Human Growth & Development, Black Psychology, Social Psychology, Junior/Senior Research Seminars, and in courses within their area of specialization/interest.  

• The successful candidate will also play a direct role (i.e. curriculum development, thesis advisement, and teaching) in a forthcoming Master’s in Psychology Program in Black Family Studies/Community Psychology.
• Teach 4 courses per semester (unless given a course release for graduate teaching and mentoring). 
• Advise psychology majors and hold weekly Office Hours.
• Contribute to the scholarly advancement of the department through a productive research agenda that includes grantsmanship and consistent publishing
• Various service activities (e.g., committee work on the departmental and university levels).
• Comply with HU Faculty Handbook processes and policies.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have an earned doctorate in Psychology in the following specialties from an accredited university/program: Developmental, Social Psychology, Neuropsychology, Cultural Psychology, and/or Cognitive Psychology. Applicants should demonstrate an expertise and proficiency in issues related to the psychological and cultural impact of identity politics; particularly related to Black males; Black masculinity; Black romantic relationship dynamics; and/or the psycho-emotional-cultural implications of police brutality on Black males. Experience in and evidence of successful teaching in a university setting (both undergraduate and graduate levels) is preferred.  Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in research, grantsmanship, and student mentorship (i.e. advisor of psychology clubs, Black male psychology students, and thesis/dissertation advisement). Rank and compensation are commensurate with credentials and experience.

• Ability to conduct respectful relationships with students both in and outside the classroom;

• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
