The Department of Sociology houses the following majors: Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Cyber Security Policy (the criminal justice track). The Department of Sociology offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice that examines the social, cultural, political, and economic forces that relate to criminal behavior. Criminal justice courses provide overviews of the legal system and places particular emphasis on types of criminal behavior, and the role of sociological theory in examining crime. The Department of Sociology seeks to fill an Assistant or Associate Professor position in the area of Criminal Justice beginning Fall 2024.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to teach a variety of courses such as: Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Criminology, Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Crime Scene Investigation, Issues in Law Enforcement, Probation and Parole, Hate Crimes, special topic courses related to criminal justice, and courses assigned by the chair. Faculty are required to advise Criminal Justice majors and hold office hours. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the scholarly advancement of the department through a productive research agenda that includes grantsmanship. Additionally, the successful candidate should demonstrate dedication to the progress of the Department of Sociology, the School of Liberal Arts and Education, and Hampton University through service activities. Finally the successful candidate should be able to complete all other duties as assigned by the University.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have an earned doctorate in Criminal Justice (a master’s degree in Sociology is preferred) from an accredited university. Experience in and evidence of successful teaching in a university setting is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in research and grantsmanship. The expectation is to hire at the Assistant Professor rank, but considerations will be made to fill the position at a higher rank depending upon the qualifications of the applicant. Rank and compensation are commensurate with credentials and experience.
