Medical Laboratory Technician- Health Center

The medical laboratory technician is responsible for the laboratory, to include the collection and processing of all specimens, maintenance of equipment, ordering and inventory of supplies, completion of laboratory requisitions, and following procedures in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA), and other applicable standards. They are expected to maintain quality and efficiency of laboratory services.

Job Hours:

Hours: Monday – Thursday – 9:00am – 6:00pm / Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm *May be required to stay beyond these hours if necessary and based on the needs of the Health Center. *Required to fill-in for other medical laboratory technicians when needed.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program.
  • Current State Board Certification for Medical Laboratory Technician required.
  • Previous Medical Laboratory Technician work experience required.
  • Graduate of Phlebotomy school required.
  • Phlebotomy training for at least 90 days preferred.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Responsible to:

  • Director of Operations, Laboratory Director, doctors, and nurse practitioners as directed.
  • Health Center students and employees, clinically.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain logbooks and records laboratory test sent out, tracking results.
  • Performs proficiency testing on laboratory equipment as indicated; to include maintaining log of proficiency testing results.
  • Establishes controls and standards for in-house laboratory procedures.
  • Performs monthly control procedure on all laboratory equipment in accordance with OSHA and CLIA.
  • Performs venipuncture and finger sticks on students and employees; collects viable specimens from the Health Center patients in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs all in-house laboratory testing.
  • Adheres to standards set by OSHA, CLIA, and COLA in documenting quality control procedures.
  • Works with the Health Center regarding test availability and the collection of specimens.
  • Prepares specimens, records for in-house and outside laboratory procedures, and records lab results.
  • Tracks laboratory results for missing reports and follow-up on missing reports.
  • Maintains daily statistics for laboratory procedures.
  • Establish and maintain a therapeutic rapport with sales representatives.
  • Conduct mandated lab review with designated accrediting agency.
  • Assist with general office duties as indicated.
  • Train on Banner and MediCat.
  • Schedule or cancel appointments in MediCat as needed.
  • Review documents in MediCat as indicated.
  • Document calls as needed in MediCat.
  • Review medical clearance status in Banner as indicated.
  • Performs COVID 19 testing on all students and employees in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs COVID 19 contact tracing on all students and employees as applicable.
  • Maintain records and logs for COVID testing, contact tracing and any VDH reporting.
  • Notification of ancillary services when needed associated with isolation.
  • Additional duties may be added as indicated.
