Founded in 1868, Hampton University is an HBCU (Historically Black College/University), located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton.  Hampton University is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.  The Honors College at Hampton University was established in 1995. Named for its founder, Dr. Freddye T. Davy, the Honors College is designed for students who possess a seriousness of academic purpose and a desire to be active rather than passive learners, who have an intellectual curiosity that supersedes an obsession with grades, who seek success rather than avoid failure, and who have the courage to demonstrate superior, ethical leadership in their chosen field.

This is a 12-month position.

Job Duties:

  • Develop and teach UNV interdisciplinary courses, assigning adjuncts as needed
  • Recruit high-achieving Hampton students to the Honors College
  • Plan and execute the following annual events: Honors College Spring orientation for new members, Fall Retreat for current members, Induction Ceremony, Senior Capstone Graduation Celebration, and University-Wide Honors Day
  • Serve as Chair of the university-wide Honors Council
  • Advise and audit students on the completion of Honors College graduation requirements
  • Facilitate the annual membership application process for Honors College
  • Administer and maintain high school charters of the W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society
  • Plan and execute the A+ Summer Residential Program for high school students
  • Support and advise Honors College students in their pursuit of nationally competitive scholarships
  • Responsibly manage the Honors College budget
  • Collaborate with Honors Council faculty about the delivery of honors courses
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Requirements: 

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. required
  • Eligible for appointment at the Associate or Full professor level
  • Academic administrative experience of at least 5 years at the departmental level or higher, including experience with faculty and staff hiring, student mentoring/advising, and budget management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Honors organizations such as the National Collegiate Honors Council or the National Association of African American Honors Programs (NAAAHP)
  • Prior experience advising students on national fellowships and awards
  • Expertise in program development for high-achieving students
  • Successful establishment of an academic program or unit.
