Position Description:

The Hampton University Department of Biological Sciences (Dr. Indu Sharma’s Lab) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Molecular Microbiology and Data Science, with an expected start date of January 2025. This is a 24-month position, with the possibility of a one-year extension contingent on funding.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically Black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.

Duties and Responsibilities:

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join Dr. Indu Sharma’s research team as a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the project titled “Linking Microbes to Blue Carbon Turnover in the Oceans and its Impact on Climate Mitigation Strategies.”

The successful candidate will primarily focus on analyzing transcriptomic and proteomic datasets related to Cyclobacterium marinum and other marine bacteria capable of degrading complex polysaccharides derived from seaweed and algae. Additionally, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will:

  1. Collaborate with an international team of scientists.
  2. Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in mentoring graduate students.
  3. Provide support with grant writing and laboratory management.
  4. Contribute to the upkeep of research activities.
  5. Participate in Departmental and University academic initiatives.

Qualifications:

PhD in Biology with emphasis on microbiology, bioinformatics, or genetics, and data science or a related field. ABD PhD candidates will be considered. Outstanding writing and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications.

The candidate will ideally have some or all of the following:

  1. Ability to customize analytical packages already available (mostly in R) to analyze large multi-omics datasets
  2. Laboratory skills (e.g., DNA/ RNA extractions, PCR, RT qPCR)
