Hampton University seeks to identify an exceptional individual with a scientific research background and noted visionary leadership to serve as Hampton University’s inaugural Lois Price Spratlen Program Director (Faculty Research Development Program) and invites applications for this position. This position is a 12 month, full time academic appointment. The position will be at the Associate or Professor level. The successful candidate reports to the Dean of the School of Nursing.
This is a research-centric position and he/she will serve as the strategic thinker and leader in fostering excellence and providing intellectual leadership for faculty and students by establishing, maintaining and strengthening a nationally recognized research program specializing in health disparities.
This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity in its role and capacity for outreach dimensions to community, industry and policy audiences that require an outstanding research record of global and national prominence and accomplishments. The Program Director shall develop, implement and oversee a health disparities research program supporting the institutional resources and research capacity building and making the program and the university a premier institution for training and educating researchers in health disparities research. The successful candidate shall facilitate sharing of ideas and enhancing communication and collaboration through four major disciplines of science: Environmental Health, Global Health, Nursing, and Public Health. He/she will manage resource allocations of the endowment to meet and fulfill three critical areas of the program: 1) strengthen the research infrastructure; 2) recruit and retain highly respected faculty to lead and train young minority students in the areas of health disparities and 3) recruit and retain motivated and committed racial and ethnic minority students with a challenging and nationally respected curriculum with global opportunities and presence.
The new purpose of the Gift is to establish and support the Lois Price Spratlen Faculty Research Development Program. The Donor and the Trustee agree that the gift will be repurposed and used to create the Lois Price Spratlen Faculty Research Development Program in the School of Nursing, Departments of Psychology, Counseling, The Urban Institute and other related sciences at Hampton University to benefit faculty development, research and innovation at Hampton University’s School of Nursing in particular and the Departments of Psychology, Counseling, Architecture (The Urban Institute) and other faculty members aiming to impact community, environmental, or public health.
Hampton University will aggressively pursue and accelerate its research agenda to enhance its status as a major liberal arts and research-oriented university which continues to strengthen its teaching through STEM programs and actively advancing its research record in Social Sciences, Psychology, Nursing, Public Health, Liberal Arts, Business, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences and International Programs.
Qualifications: Criteria for appointment to the endowed Program Director must reflect the highest ideals of academic excellence and scholarly or creative achievement. Procedures for recruitment must be consistent with the University’s Affirmative Action Plan, stipulations of the endowment, and other administrative procedures established in the various academic units. Involvement of the faculty, students, and others, as appropriate, is essential in the review and recommendation of candidates for appointment as the endowed Program Director.
General Criteria for Appointment: Applicants must possess a doctorate, preferably, Ph.D., or equivalent degree, and have demonstrated scientific leadership in research of national and international standing in the area of minority health disparities. The following general criteria will be used in the review and recommendation of the candidate for appointment to the endowed Program Director:
- Earned doctorate degree in Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, or Science fields is preferred.
- Evidence of professional achievement at the national and/or international level to enhance the statue of the program and of the University’s faculty and students
- Outstanding record of leadership in productive research, publication, creativity, and/or scholarly achievement appropriate to the discipline and fields of specialization
- Proven track record and ability to conceptualize, develop and implement programs to challenge faculty and students to successfully achieve the overall mission of the program
- Evidence of a continuing record of exemplary academic and professional citizenship appropriate to the discipline or profession
- Proof of research, grantsmanship, and teaching experience. Evidence of NIH independently funded research or other major funding.
- The Program Director shall maintain the Program and work to ensure its sustainability.
- The Program Director shall be responsible for researching and applying for grant funds to supplement the Program.
- The Program Director shall be responsible for acquiring contracts for other Program staff, if any, including consultants and graduate research assistants.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean.
The successful candidate will present a record sufficiently consistent in quantity and quality to warrant the expectation of continued performance and contributions at an outstanding level.
Salary and Start Date:
Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. Position remains open until filled, with application review beginning immediately.
Program participants will continue as faculty of Hampton University and receive the same compensation they would receive if not a Program participant. In addition to the Program stipend and their compensation from Hampton University, Program participants will receive 25% release time from teaching responsibilities for each year of the two-year Program. Faculty members are required to teach a total of 12 credit hours per semester. Therefore, if a faculty member teaches 4 classes at 3 credits each, they will have one course buy out each semester. This section does not apply to Program participants on full year or two semester sabbaticals. Program participants on single semester sabbatical receive 25% release time for a single semester either preceding the onset of the sabbatical period or the semester following the sabbatical at their selection.
