Job Description

The Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications invites nominations and applications for a qualified full-time position of Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor.


Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. 

The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications is the result of more than 50 years of mass media-related instruction at Hampton University. Founded in 2002, the Scripps Howard School offers program services to more than 225 students who major in journalism and strategic communication. It emphasizes excellence and innovation in teaching while adhering to the core standards and ethical principles of the industry.

The assistant dean works closely with the dean of the school on program planning and review and serves as liaison on University-wide academic committees. The assistant dean reports directly to the dean and attends University meetings in the dean’s absence.

Job Duties

Strategic Planning Communications

  • Work with the dean to manage SHSJC priorities; track progress of school’s set goals.
  • Draft semester schedule and faculty teaching assignments for dean’s approval.
  • Draft  agendas for internal meetings.
  • Draft SHSJC reports, for dean’s review and approval.
  • Provide updated SHSJC data to  University website team.
  • Assist in managing student complaints and concerns.
  • Serve as first line of communication for faculty concerns.

Administrative

  • Manage communication with SHSJC stakeholders (e.g. faculty, staff, students, advisory council members, alumni, etc.).
  • Compile task lists for weekly discussion meeting with the dean.
  • Assist in assigning work to internal office work-study students.  
  • Manage student internship programs.
  • Maintain SHSJC data in filing collaborative system.
  • Provide planning support for SHSJC-hosted events.

Student Advising

  • Review seniors’ credits for graduation clearance.
  • Review and audit transcripts for current and transfer students.
  • Advise students on class schedules.
  • Assist students in reviewing internship opportunities.
  • Liaise with external offices (e.g. registrar’s office and financial aid)

Teaching

  • Full-time faculty member.
  • Teach 2/4 load; capable of teaching international communications course.
  • Mentor students
  • Collaborate with faculty in developing  and  assessing  student learning objectives.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess the following skill set:

  • Superior organizational support and analytical skills, integrating disciplined and ethical work habits.
  • Multilingual – must speak at least three languages, including English and French.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate study abroad programs and international partnerships.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team.
  • High energy and commitment to excellence and execution to disseminate accurate and vetted information.
  • Media savvy and possess a general understanding of the media and communication industries.
  • Willingness to support a diverse population of students.
  • Ability to work in a participatory and collegial setting, multitasking, and professionally and effectively managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite and office management software.
  • Capable of adapting to new technologies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in journalism, public relations, communications, or related field from an accredited higher learning institution, preferably from an R1 institution.
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in the media and/or communication industries – journalism, public relations, marketing, advertising or related field.
  • Minimum three years teaching experience at the tertiary level.
  • Must possess legal documentation to work in the United States of America.
