Position Description

The department of chemistry and biochemistry at Hampton University seeks application for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with anticipated starting date of August 2026. Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically Black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, non-sectarian institution of higher learning with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

The department of chemistry and biochemistry offers three American Chemical Society certified baccalaureate degree tracks: traditional B.S. in chemistry, a B.S. in chemistry with concentration in forensic chemistry, and a B.S. in biochemistry. The department also offers a thesis-based master’s degree in chemistry and master’s in teaching chemistry.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching, maintaining a vibrant research program, scholarly activities, securing external funding, and engaging in professional service. The ideal candidates are expected to have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, evidence of academic scholarship and research ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals, and potential for securing external funds. Primary teaching responsibilities include general chemistry analytical and forensic chemistry courses for non-majors and majors with the opportunity to teach upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidates are expected to have a clear understanding of curriculum design and development, engage in student centered undergraduate research, participate in mentoring, and service to the department and university.

Qualification

The successful candidates should have a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry or forensic chemistry. We are specifically seeking candidates with a research focus in analytical and forensic chemistry whose expertise includes environmental analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, separation, and drug analysis and/or toxicology. Preference will be given to candidates with robust collaborative potential across departmental boundaries on campus.
