Hampton University invites applications for the position of Interim Chairperson of the Department of Architecture. The University seeks a visionary leader with a proven record of academic and administrative skills and accomplishments. The anticipated start date of this position is August 2026.
Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Tidewater Peninsula in Hampton, Virginia. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The Department of Architecture is housed within the School of Engineering, Architecture and Aviation and has a population of 200 students and nine full-time faculty, as well as adjunct faculty from the Hampton Roads area. The architecture program at Hampton has a distinguished history and is currently celebrating its 85th anniversary, and 60 years of full accreditation.
The Department offers a NAAB accredited 5-1/2-year Master of Architecture first professional degree. The program is open admission. The Department’s mission is to prepare our students to enter professional practice or related fields of architecture as critical creative thinkers and problem solvers. We are dedicated to encouraging our students’ global environmental sensitivity and developing their ability to make important social and environmental changes. Our program’s curriculum incorporates urban design into architecture studies with a focus on community engagement and sustainability. The Department offers a nationally recognized concentration in Adaptation to Sea Level Rise working in collaboration with local communities, government agencies and non-profit organizations. Our students have the option to enroll in the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) program track.
Qualifications
The interim chairperson must have demonstrated leadership and achievement in architectural practice or education, with a strong expertise developed in any of the following areas: performance-based design, architectural technology and construction, sustainability, urban and community design, and historic preservation. Candidates must have earned a terminal degree in architecture, have professional registration as an architect, and have demonstrated commitment to excellence in design, teaching, research and scholarship. Administrative experience in academia or the profession is required. The interim chairperson must be able to work with the institutional administration, the faculty, the staff, and the students. The selected candidate will have the responsibility of administering the program, fundraising, curricular stewardship, program accreditation reports, outreach to local communities, alumni and the professional community, student and faculty recruitment, and teaching. The interim chair will maintain an active connection with ACSA and ARCC, NOMA, AIA, and NCARB. The interim chair represents Hampton University’s program as an ex-officio member of the AIA Virginia Board of Directors.
Salary is based on qualifications $100,000-$130,000
