The Hampton University Department of Aviation invites nominations and applications for a full-time nine (9) month tenure-track Flight Education position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor start of the Fall 2024 semester. Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The School of Engineering and Technology includes the Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Architecture, and Department of Aviation. The programs are all ABET, NAAB, and AABI accredited. The Department of Aviation offers three Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Aviation and a Minor in Aviation Management. The objectives of these programs are (1) to prepare students for meaningful aviation careers within the government and aerospace industry and (2) to enable students to bring to aviation a strong sense of social awareness and responsibility to the public.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of aviation and flight courses, coach the University’s Flight Team, collaborate with colleagues in the Hampton University Air Traffic Control and Aviation Management programs; perform progress review flights with students as applicable, and work with the Flight Operations staff at the contracted airport. The teaching load is typically 12 or more credits per semester. Applicants should also demonstrate a desire to serve the University community, conduct research, seek external funding, and evidence of enhancing their own professional development.  Candidates will also perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in Aviation and a Federal Aviation Administration Commercial Pilot Rating with Instrument and Certified Flight Instructor ratings that meet Chief Ground Instructor requirements of 14 CFR 141.35(e), with flight currency within one calendar year. An Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP), Multi-Engine rating, and Certified Flight Instructor-Multi-Engine (MEI); and Instrument Ratings (CFII) are highly desirable, as well as prior safety program and military aviation experience (fixed wing or rotary).

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate previous teaching experience at the university level. The successful candidate(s) will possess the following skills and abilities:

  • Can contribute to the vision of the University as a whole.
