The Hampton University Department of School of Science invites nominations and applications for Assistant Dean of the School of Science. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The School of Science offers degrees in the areas/departments of atmospheric and planetary sciences, biology, chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, communicative and speech disorders, marine and environmental science, mathematics, physics and physical therapy.
Duties and Responsibilities
Hampton University is accepting applications for the Assistant Dean position in the School of Science. All disciplines within the Sciences are eligible. Research, teaching, and outreach activity involving undergraduate and graduate students is expected.
To lead, manage and develop the Faculty’s focus on the achievement of excellence in teaching and research nationally and internationally.
To support activities to maximize the economic, social and cultural impact of research, as appropriate.
To strengthen the Faculty’s interdisciplinary links across the University by liaising, on behalf of the Faculty, with other Deans, where appropriate, to initiate and develop taught programs, research programs and develop international, national and regional links which span other Institutions and/or Services.
To oversee the management and operation of the Faculty.
To ensure the delivery and ongoing development of the curriculum To personally maintain an appropriate academic contributions
Qualifications
Must have earned a PhD in a STEM field
- Demonstrated outstanding records of teaching, research, scholarly activities, grantsmanship, service, and leadership to warrant tenure with Associate Professor in an academic department in the School of Science.
- Ability to successfully lead, motivate and manage multi-skilled staff groups and to build effective teams and networks
- Ability to contribute fully to management and development of the University including an awareness and understanding of key factors currently affecting higher education
- Strong track record ofresearch and/or a strong track record of pedagogic or related activities in a discipline appropriate to the work of the Faculty
- Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of communicating effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders
- Ability to advocate and win buy-in from members of the academic community both within the Faculty and across the University
- Minimum three years of experience as an academic administrative leadership.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with individuals and groups representing a wide range of academic and administrative interests.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
- Salary range for this position depends on experience
