Director for Corporation and Foundation Relations- Advancement and External Engagement

The Director for Corporate and Foundation Relations is charged with developing the overall strategy and execution of a program to secure external funding from corporate sources and philanthropic foundations in support of the strategic priorities of Hampton University. Developing comprehensive relationships with the corporate community, beyond simply developing philanthropic collaboration, is essential to achieving mutually beneficial and effective outcomes. Subsequently, the director will facilitate and coordinate the establishment of a comprehensive corporate and organizational relationship strategic plan and will collaborate with key campus partners, including faculty, program directors, peers, and other campus leaders to identify programs and projects that allow comprehensive community relationships to grow and thrive.  This position will report to the Associate Vice President for Philanthropic Engagement. 

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for relationships with faculty, staff, friends, alumni and other constituents on all aspects of grant seeking, implementation, and administration, including developing/writing high quality concept papers, letters of intent, compelling proposals, narrative and financial reports and evaluations.
  • Generates major gifts and/or principal gifts and pledges from corporations and foundations annually.
  • Conceptualizes and creates fundraising proposals for the solicitation of major gifts to be solicited to corporations and foundations, both prospects and current donors after educating them about relevant University projects, programs and areas of need and determining what their priorities and preferences for supporting the University.
  • Manages all logistical details and makes all necessary arrangements for visits, program and other methods of contact between themselves or other representatives of the Advancement or Presidents Office and any prospect or current source of major gift support from corporations and foundations for the University.
  • Represents the Advancement and External Engagement division at both internal and external campus events and activities as necessary.
  • Utilizes available resources, databases, and networking to research and identify corporate and foundation prospects.
  • Facilitates corporate and foundation outreach including social media, campus visits, and external engagement collateral.
  • Responsible for overseeing all functions of donor database management.  Oversees/implements “contact detail” input.  Assures that an accurate donor database is managed.    
  • Oversees timely donor acknowledgements, including thank you letters/stewardship.
  • Responsible for timely research and writing for the submission of grant proposals and subsequent required reporting.
  • Attends Advancement planning meetings and departmental meetings.
  • Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of Hampton University and individual departments’ and/or schools missions and needs as they pertain to fundraising priorities.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those described above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

Qualifications:  

  • Minimum of five [5] years of fund raising experience in corporate and/or foundations relations is preferred.
  • Experience in higher education an added plus.
  • Knowledge of fundraising development principles.

Requirements: 

  • Master’s degree or other advanced degree in related field is highly preferred.
  • Best practices and trends in the development field.
  • Thorough understanding of all approaches and techniques used in the development process for corporations and foundations, including prospect identification and research, relationship building, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Skilled in preparing written reports and presentations.
  • Professional demeanor, flexible, and able to respond to multiple demands.
  • Able and willing to take responsibility.
  • Strong communication skills; possess independent judgment; attention to detail; project management skills and the ability to follow instructions.
  • The ability to take initiative and work independently is a must.
  • Must have the ability to manage complex tasks and meet deadlines; knowledge of University programs.
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge and proficient in Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Travel is mandatory in the fulfillment of the duties and responsibilities. 
  • Must be flexible regarding work schedule as some nights and weekends are required.
