Rev. Lance Bacon, PhD has taught systematic and practical theology, pastoral ministry, and Christian history since 2016 and has served at Hampton University School of Religion since its inception.

Moreover, the Schools allegiance to both biblical and academic standards fosters a culture where the best and the brightest can truly thrive. Our classrooms are not filled simply with students, but with emerging scholars individuals who are not seeking merely a degree to hang on the wall, but an educational experience marked by personal and professional development that equips them to effect positive change in their communities and in the lives of others. Indeed, this is a place where purpose begins. Each class provides evidence of their growth in that purpose, opportunities for my own growth, and hope for our future. That is what makes Hampton SOR so special.”

Catheline Henderson is currently pursuing a PhD in Public Theology and Community Engagement at Hampton University School of Religion. She began her academic journey at Hampton University in 2022, enrolling in the Master of Divinity program. “Selecting Hampton University was an easy decision,” Henderson shared. “Hampton’s reputation shaped by my father’s experiences as a longtime attendee of the Ministers’ Conference had always kept the University on my radar. From the moment I reached out to the School of Religion, I was warmly embraced by the staff and faculty, who answered every question, provided the information I needed to make a sound decision, and guided me through the entire enrollment process. That level of care has continued throughout my time at Hampton. I have always felt heard and genuinely supported in both my educational and vocational goals.” Henderson also credits Hampton University for the rigor and depth of its academic training. “The curriculum requires full commitment and discipline, but there is great joy in realizing how much you learn and grow along the way. Because of the foundation I have received at Hampton, I feel confident standing at any podium or participating in any meeting.” She notes that the impact of her education is evident not only to her, but to those around her. “I often hear people say, ‘Something is different about you,’ or ‘Your theology is deep and on point yet relatable.’ I can answer questions with clarity and also expound upon them. The sermons I preach are different. The classes I teach are different. These transformations are directly tied to my educational experience at Hampton University.” After completing her Master of Divinity, Henderson made the decision to continue her journey by enrolling in the PhD program. “This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Hampton University is the only choice for me.”

This month, we celebrate students who live out their calling through leadership, service, and scholarship. Julian is a shining example of what it means to embody Hampton University’s School of Religion mission with purpose and heart.

Meet Julian Hobdy!

Program: Doctor of Philosophy Public Theology and Community Engagement

Time at Hampton University School of Religion: First semester (11–12 weeks)

Julian shares that one of the most impactful parts of his journey has been his cohort community—a group that supports one another, thinks deeply together, and truly does life side by side.He also appreciates the care and compassion shown by professors and leadership as they help students balance rigorous doctoral study with the realities of everyday life. The commitment to both academic excellence and holistic well-being has deeply shaped his experience.

Most transformative for Julian has been engaging in rigorous theological study among fellow people of color who share similar lived experiences. With diversity in thought, tradition, and expression, the School of Religion feels “less like a classroom and more like a village.”

We are proud to celebrate Julian and all he brings to the Hampton University School of Religion community.

Pamela Elizabeth Riddick – Student

The Hampton University School of Religion is proud to highlight Pamela Elizabeth Riddick, a student in the Master of Divinity in Pastoral Leadership program. Pamela enrolled at the Hampton University School of Religion in Fall 2024 and is expected to graduate in May 2027. She is honored to be part of the inaugural Master of Divinity in Pastoral Leadership program, joining a community committed to faith, scholarship, and service. Pamela chose to matriculate at Hampton University for its rich legacy of excellence and longstanding reputation for developing leaders who embody both faith and scholarship. Hampton’s guiding principle that “Scholarship is Ministry” deeply resonates with her desire to grow spiritually and academically as she prepares to serve communities with compassion, action, and purpose. Her time at the Hampton University School of Religion has been both transformative and affirming. Being part of a community that values faith, critical thinking, and service has strengthened her calling to ministry and deepened her understanding of leadership rooted in compassion and purpose. With support from faculty, peers, and the broader Hampton community, Pamela continues to expand her theological knowledge while embracing the responsibilities of servant leadership. Pamela brings a wealth of life experience to her journey. A graduate of Fisk University (BA, Theatre, 1974) and Norfolk State University (M.A.Ed., 2007), she also earned an Education Specialist degree from Nova Southeastern University in 2017 and retired from Norfolk State University in 2019. After years of discerning her path, Pamela answered her call to ministry in February 2024 and preached her trial sermon in September 2024. She describes the Hampton University School of Religion as a place that fosters academic growth, spiritual formation, and a shared commitment to making a positive difference in the world. The program has nurtured her spiritual development while strengthening her confidence as an emerging leader in ministry. Pamela hopes her journey will encourage others to follow their calling with faith and perseverance. She reflects on the words of Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Her story is a powerful reminder that God’s purpose unfolds in every season of life and that the call to serve can lead us to transformative places of faith, leadership, and impact.

Reflecting on her experience at the Hampton University School of Religion, Dr. James notes that she most enjoys being part of a new theological educational program that allows her to share her passion for biblical studies with students who seek to deepen their spiritual growth through scholarship. She describes the experience as both fulfilling and humbling, and she is especially honored to expand her service to her alma mater as a two-time graduate and a full-time employee of Hampton University in another department. Dr. James also values the freedom to be creative and innovative in delivering course content, motivating and empowering students to pursue excellence in both faith and education.
