Dr. Avril C. Sargeant serves as the Assistant Director of the Student Counseling Center at Hampton University. She is a licensed professional clinical counselor with over a decade of experience supporting students through life transitions, trauma, and identity development. Dr. Sargeant holds a BA in Political Science from Morris College, an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ashland Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary. Her clinical training includes EFT, EMDR, and DBT, and she brings a trauma-informed, evidence-based approach to her work. Passionate about supporting BIPOC students, aging out foster care youth, and their wellness. She is dedicated to helping others find clarity, purpose, and resilience. Dr. Sargeant has also served in university and community-based roles, including as lead clinician at Baldwin Wallace University and a consultant at Cleveland State and Case Western Reserve. In addition to her work at Hampton, she maintains a private practice focused on empowering communities of color. Outside of counseling, she enjoys reading, traveling, game nights, and cheering on Hampton University women’s basketball.
