Peer Support
The mission of the Peer Counselors Organization at Hampton University is to serve as an extension of the Student Counseling Center by:
- Developing and presenting programs and activities on campus to increase awareness and knowledge about college student psychosocial concerns.
- To serve as role models of psychosocially healthy and self-actualizing young adults.
- To be attentive to ways that students express their psychosocial concerns and needs.
- To serve as a support group for all members of the organization in order to strengthen the Organization’s service to the campus and the community.
To accomplish this mission, all members must undergo an extensive and continual training program in order to ensure that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to promote an understanding of college student concerns; provide non-judgmental listening, refer to counseling center professionals when appropriate, and to support and help students think and reflect on concerns they may be experiencing.
