The Math Specialist offers individualized tutoring for students needing assistance with the Praxis II Math Academic Skills Test, the Praxis II Math Content Knowledge Exam, and/or the Quantitative Reasoning Section of the GRE General Test. This part-time position will require morning and evening hours and has no sick/annual leave. The position begins September 1, ends on May 30, requires 20 hours per week, and the position reports to the Director of Education Advising and Assessment Center (EAAC).

Job Duties:
• Administer Diagnostic assessments to assess students’ strengths and weaknesses and reviews the results with the students.
• Plan for and instruct weekly small group workshops and individualized remediation sessions covering all skills and topics identified on Praxis II Math assessments.
• Provide differentiated instruction for quantitative reasoning questions involving geometric, algebraic, statistical, and chance elements; and for conceptual and procedural knowledge questions involving functions, calculus, geometry, number and quantity, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics.
• Prepare targeted study plans to remedy mathematical misconceptions; strengthen ability to problem solve with multiple representations; and to make mathematical connections, models, and to reason mathematically.
• Provide mathematic test taking strategies (e.g., modeling with diagrams, making conjectures, and selecting and applying appropriate formulas) for improved test performance.
• Concentrate on three keys to success: understanding exams, preparing for the exams, and developing critical thinking skills and conceptual knowledge.
• Advise students on matters related to test preparedness and requirements for endorsements in teacher education.
• Direct students to appropriate Departmental Contacts and Resources
• Assist with Departmental Functions such as American Education Week, recruitment activities, etc.
• Other duties as directed.

Qualifications:  

  • Extensive experience in K-12 math education

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or 18 course hours in math or related discipline and three years or more of teaching experience.
