Karen D. Maxwell is an Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Business Management and Management Information Systems (MIS). She earned a B.S. degree in Marketing from Rutgers University, an MBA from Long Island University and a Ph.D. in Health Management from Walden University.
Dr. Maxwell began her career at Hampton University as an Adjunct Professor in 2009. She uses innovative teaching methods and incorporates her professional experience into the classroom. Along with members of her department, Dr. Maxwell has led student study abroad trips to Spain, Italy, and Dubai. Her MIS class prepares students to perform work required by Technology Consultants. Other courses taught include Business Research, Business Communications, Business Organization Management, International Business, Organizational Behavior, Special Topics in Business, and Technology and Innovation.
Dr. Maxwell is the Improve Implementation Team Chairperson. As such, she is responsible for providing leadership to 60 Assessment Facilitators and Oversight Reviewers to report the results of student performance at Hampton University. In addition, she has served or continues to serve as a member, co-chair, and chair of various Hampton University and J. T. George School of Business committees.
Dr. Maxwell’s research is focused upon the use of technology to increase participation in healthy lifestyle behavior to prevent chronic diseases. Her most current publication is an April 2022 article in the British Journal of Healthcare and Medical Research on the role of self-efficacy and technology upon the participation of men in healthy lifestyle behavior. She has worked as an academician on the Toyota Grant and served as a fellow for Dollar Tree. In addition, she served as Co-Director of the U. S. Department of Energy Business of Engineering Program.
Prior to coming to Hampton University, Dr. Maxwell was a Sales Director at AT&T responsible for the development of Management Information Systems Solutions for a $36M base of large businesses. She has worked for several information technology organizations such as Verizon and Sprint. In addition, she worked for the Port Authority of NY & NJ providing telecommunications services to employees at the World Trade Center.
In addition to serving on the Hampton University Board of Trustees as the Faculty Representative, Dr. Maxwell’s service also includes membership in several professional organizations such as the Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VTSE), American Public Health Association (APHA), and Association for Information Technology Professionals. She has moderated professional and student conferences.
Dr. Maxwell is a recipient of the Hampton University E. L. Hamm, Sr. Distinguished Teaching Award and the Hampton University Academic Excellence Award.
