Admission Requirements for Freshman Students

The Early Action (non-binding) deadline is November 15 and decision letters are mailed by January 15.   Applications received after November 15 are processed after all Early Action decisions have been rendered.  The standard admission application deadline is March 1 and decision letters are mailed on a rolling basis, generally three to four weeks upon receipt of a complete application packet.

High School students must complete at least four units of English, three units of college-preparatory mathematics, two units of foreign language, two units of social science, and two units in the natural sciences. The University recommends that candidates take the most rigorous academic program available in their schools, including at least five academic courses each year and AP, IB, and honors courses whenever possible.

Test Optional Admission Policy

Students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (Unweighted), or who rank in the top 10 percent of their class, have the option to choose whether or not to submit standardized test scores (SAT or ACT).

Applicants choosing not to submit standardized test scores must submit at least one recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor. Home-schooled applicants, students attending schools outside the United States. Students wishing to be considered for merit based scholarships must submit standardized test scores.  

If you submit both the ACT and SAT, the University uses the most favorable score. Your SAT is based on a mix and match of your highest Evidence Based Reading/Writing and Math scores. Your ACT score is based on your highest composite.

Active members of Jack & Jill of America, Inc., Boy Scout – Eagle Scout, Girl Scouts – Gold Scout, or 100+ Black Men of America. Only students applying for Fall 2024 should submit this form.

How to Apply

Please submit all credentials at one time to ensure a timely response.  The application review process requires the full attention of a committed and dedicated staff.  We ask that you refrain from calling or emailing the office for status checks.  All admission decisions are communicated in writing.  Your patience with the entire process is appreciated.

Students interested in attending Hampton University can apply online. All students must submit the following items for admission consideration:

  • Completed on-line application
  • Application fee of $50.00 (non-refundable). Personal checks are not an acceptable form of payment.  Hampton University does not accept ANY fee waivers.
  • OFFICIAL high school transcript.
  • Standardized test (SAT or ACT) Only  (Reference Test Optional Admission Policy 
  • One letter of recommendation from your high school guidance counselor or a high school teacher
  • A minimum 500 word essay on the topic of CHARACTER:
    •  Character matters at Hampton University.   Describe what exhibiting good character means to you and provide specific examples of your demonstrated behavior in this regard.
