What are the core requirements?  Every Hampton University student prior to graduation should attain the following core competencies which include critical thinking skills, ethics, international diversity, information and technology literacy, quantitative reasoning, oral and written communication, and scientific reasoning.


Can I take classes at other colleges/universities? Yes. Students have the opportunity to take classes at another institution that is accredited, with signed approval from the Provost and the Dean of their department.


Can I double major? Yes.  Students who plan to graduate with dual majors must satisfy all requirements in each major, including all related courses, with separate courses. Students choosing dual major options are required to maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.


Are there opportunities for study abroad?  Yes. Students have the opportunity to study abroad for either the summer or the full academic semester. The student must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to participate. For more information visit the International Office


How many credits are needed to graduate? Students must meet the minimum of 120 semester hours of credit accepted by the University.


What is the grading scale like at Hampton?¬†Hampton students receive a letter grade for each class in which they are enrolled, ranging from A+ to F.¬† Students must earn a passing grade of at least a ‚ÄúC‚ÄĚ in all courses in their major area of study. Is there an ROTC program at Hampton?  Yes. We offer Army ROTC, Naval Science, and Marine Corps.


What is the honors program?  The Honors College offers a curricula option that enhances the regular university experience through developing of intellectual and ethical leadership skills. For more information visit Freddye T Davy Honors College


How can I be considered to be part of the honors program? Students may apply for the Freddye Davy Honors College after completion of one full semester at Hampton University.  Students must have a Hampton University GPA of 3.2 in order to apply.

Financial Aid & Scholarships:


How do I receive financial aid and when should I apply?  To receive financial aid from Hampton University, students should apply after October 1st of each year preceding the award year.   The priority consideration date is February 15th. For more information visit our website at


Does your school offer work study programs? Hampton University participates in the federal work study program which is awarded on a first-come, first served basis based upon your eligibility for federal student assistance.


Are there any scholarships available to students?  A variety of scholarship opportunities are available for students.  The Office of Admission awards merit based scholarships to entering freshmen that range in value from $5,000- $25,000 per year. Admitted students are automatically considered for these awards and a separate application is not required for this process.  For  additional information visit

What are the admission requirements?

High School students must complete at least four units of English, three units of college-preparatory mathematics, two units of foreign language, two units of social science, and two units in the natural sciences. The University recommends that candidates take the most rigorous academic program available in their schools, including at least five academic courses each year and AP, IB, and honors courses whenever possible. Does HU accept Advanced Placement credits?

Yes, students who enter Hampton University with Advanced Placement (AP) scores 3, 4, or 5 in areas equivalent to General Education Courses will be given credit. The credit will appear on your transcript and be treated the same as transfer credit. You must send your scores directly to the Registrar’s Office. I am interested in applying as a first-year student. What is the difference between Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision?

Early decision¬†plans are binding ‚ÄĒ a student who is accepted as an ED applicant must attend the¬†college. Early¬†action plans are nonbinding ‚ÄĒ students receive an¬†early¬†response to their application but¬†do¬†not have to commit to the¬†college¬†until the traditional reply date of May 1.”


Visiting Hampton University

Does Hampton offer any summer programs?

Yes, Hampton offers a Pre-College program. The Hampton University Pre-College Program is a five-week, academic enrichment, residential program. The Pre-College program promotes and secures an environment where students will have an opportunity to grow personally, while they enhance their academic and leadership possibilities. By attending the program, students will gain exposure to the full range of resources and facilities that are made available to them by the university. The program invites students that will complete their junior or senior year of high school by June of each academic year, as well as students who may not be attending Hampton University in the fall, but would like a head start on college level introductory courses. 


Hampton also offers a program called Summer Bridge for freshmen who are accepted provisionally into the university. Freshmen who may not have met Hampton’s requirements for full acceptance into the university can be granted the opportunity to complete 2 summer courses. If the freshman completes those courses successfully, they will be granted full acceptance into the university and be able to start classes in the fall.  This program is by invitation only.


When are tours given? How can I schedule a campus tour?

Currently, Hampton University offers in person and virtual tours. You can also sign up for a live Q&A session with an admission counselor Tuesday-Thursday from 4pm-4:30pm.  


Does Hampton University have summer school?

I am interested in visiting the campus. Does Hampton University offer an overnight campus visitation program?  Currently the University does not offer an overnight campus visitation program.  However; there is an annual Honors Visitation weekend event.   This program is open to high ability students who are in their senior year of high school and is by invitation only.  Inquiries are welcomed.

Does Hampton have a marching band?

Yes, The Marching Force is a very popular program on campus. The band has traveled to Rome, Italy and been invited to participate in the 2021 Macy’s Day Parade; been featured in Beyonce’s Homecoming documentary, and so much more. For more information about the band please visit HU Marching Force


Does Hampton have a community service program?

Hampton University’s clubs and organizations present ample opportunities to participate in community service. Our Student Leadership Program is one of many organizations that affords students a chance to get involved in community service projects.

Campus Life


Can freshman students have cars?

Students are allowed to bring cars on campus once they have earned 60 credits or more which is typically their junior year. 


What is the average class size?

The average class size at Hampton is about 20-25 students per classroom. The student to teacher ratio is 13:1



Do freshmen have a curfew?

Yes.  The freshman class is required to have a curfew. On Sunday-Thursday curfew is at 11:00pm and Friday and Saturday curfew is 1:00am. The freshman class stays on curfew for approximately 4- 6 weeks.


How many students are enrolled at Hampton?

Hampton University has approximately 3,200 students currently enrolled.


Are first-year students required to live on campus?

Yes, first year students are required to reside on campus unless their permanent address is within a 10-mile radius.


Does Hampton have co-ed housing?

W.E.B DuBois is an upper classman honors hall which is our only co-ed residence hall on campus. Students must have a minimum GPA of a 3.0 to reside in this residence hall


What medical services are provided for students?

Hampton University has a health center located on campus and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.  This facility has a trained medical staff that includes board certified physicians, a nurse practitioner, a medical lab technician, a certified health educator, and other medical support personnel.  After hours and on weekends there is a nurse on call 24/7 to answer questions and concerns.


Is Hampton’s Campus Safe?

Hampton University is a gated campus with security at every entrance.   Also Hampton has police academy trained officers and security guards on duty 24/7 as well as Security booths and Emergency Call Buttons throughout the campus

Who is eligible for admission to Hampton University?

Students who meet all of our admission requirements and submit a complete application package will be considered for admission. A holistic approach is taken when considering a student’s acceptance.   This includes your grade point average, standardized test scores, community involvement, extracurricular activities, students who have taken a rigorous course load such as AP, IB courses, and/or dual enrollment, and character.


What are some resources and support programs available to students?

The Student Success Center provides support services to all students, with a special focus on freshmen, to provide them a firm foundation for academic success through various service offerings.  Academic Support Services is provided through academic counseling, self-management tools, study skills development, and tutorial services.  The Career Counseling and Planning Center assists students in developing meaningful career goals. Annual career fairs are held and present an opportunity for business, government agencies and institutional representatives from all over the country, a chance to acquaint students with their organizations while recruiting for interns and full-time employment.
