Tuskegee University President Dr. Mark A. Brown to Deliver Historic Keynote at Hampton University’s 133rd Annual Founder’s Day Weekend
This year’s commemoration honors the enduring Hampton–Tuskegee shared legacy while spotlighting the visionary leaders and families who shaped both institutions.

Hampton, Virginia (January 14, 2025) — From January 23-25, Hampton University and Tuskegee University will convene alumni, students, scholars, and community leaders for Hampton’s 133rd Annual Founder’s Day Weekend, a tribute to legacy, resilience, and shared history. As a meaningful continuation of tradition, Tuskegee University President Dr. Mark A. Brown will deliver a keynote address that underscores the essential role of historically Black colleges and universities in the American higher education landscape, and the profound impact their graduates have had on the nation and the world.
Founded in 1868 by General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, Hampton University emerged as a pioneering training college for newly freed men and women following the Civil War. In 1881, Hampton alumnus Booker T. Washington, with the backing of General Armstrong, became Founding Principal of Tuskegee University, to advance practical education and leadership development for African Americans.
Both institutions remain grounded in the belief that education is a powerful engine for individual achievement and societal progress and stand united in connecting and extending a collaborative educational philosophy across the South.
Honoring the Past with Connections to the Future
The Founder’s Day program will take place in Ogden Hall on January 25 at 11:30 a.m. and will honor this rich heritage while celebrating the university’s continued influence on higher education and society.
This ceremony will also recognize the descendants of the Armstrong family; the family of James Fields, one of the first graduating students at Hampton; the Tucker family (the first enslaved family brought to English North America in 1619), and the Washington family. Members of all families will be present for this historic display of unity and connection.
Celebrating Local Leaders, President’s Citizenship Awardees

Founder’s Day also highlights Hampton’s tradition of honoring civic excellence through the President’s Citizenship Award, which recognizes individuals whose leadership and service have strengthened communities locally and nationally. These honors reflect Hampton’s enduring commitment to uplifting those who embody the institution’s values beyond its campus.
This year’s honorees include The Honorable L. Louise Lucas, State Senator, Mrs. Mary Bunting, City Manager, City of Hampton, and Hampton Trustee James T. George, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and namesake of the James T. George School of Business.
Ties That Bind, A Legacy That Empowers
Founder’s Day offers a moment to reflect on Hampton’s remarkable journey, which began with General Armstrong’s commitment to education as liberation and continues today through academic excellence, national leadership, and global impact.
“Founder’s Day calls us to honor the sacred work of institutions born from vision, courage, and an unshakable belief in excellence,” said Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams.
“Hampton University and Tuskegee University stand as twin pillars of that legacy, shaping leaders, advancing knowledge, and proving what’s possible when education is rooted in purpose. As we welcome President Brown, we celebrate not only our history, but a shared commitment to preparing the next generation to lead with intellect, integrity, and impact.”
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Mark A. Brown

Dr. Mark A. Brown was appointed the tenth president and CEO of Tuskegee University on July 1, 2024, marking the first time in the institution’s nearly 143-year history that an alumnus was selected to lead the university. A proud Tuskegee graduate and retired Major General, Brown earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1986. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Troy University, a Master of Strategic Studies from the Air Command and Staff College, a master’s in national security strategy from the National War College, and a doctorate in Education from Baylor University.
“The historical significance that blends our stories may be well-known separately and less to non-historians,” said Dr. Brown.
“As President Williams and I now lead our respective alma maters with pride, we are committed to strengthening our shared history and creating opportunities to expand interest in our distinguished universities and other HBCUs across the country,” he said.
His executive leadership experience includes advanced training with Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, and the Eli and Edythe Broad Academy for Urban School Superintendents, now hosted at the Yale School of Management.
