DeShaé Wakefield is a fourth-year student in Hampton University’s prestigious 5-Year MBA Program, she is a dynamic emerging business leader whose journey reflects the power of creativity, discipline, and intentional growth. As a Business Administration major in the James T. George (JTG) School of Business, Wakefield continues to distinguish herself through entrepreneurial initiative, campus leadership, and a deep commitment to community impact.

A Passion for Business Rooted in Creativity

Although DeShaé comes from a STEM background, her long-standing passion for creativity and leadership led her toward the study of business. Since 2017, she has owned and operated her own art venture, Designs by DeShaé, where she began teaching herself the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.

“I am interested in studying business because, although I come from a STEM background, I have always had a passion for creativity and leadership,” she explains. “When I learned about Hampton’s 5-Year MBA program, I immediately recognized it as the perfect fit—not only because of the opportunity to earn a dual degree, but also because of the vast opportunities it provides for growth and professional development.”

Through the Business Administration program, Wakefield has strengthened her technical expertise, gained valuable real-world experience, and strategically applied classroom knowledge to her entrepreneurial pursuits.

Leadership and Personal Growth at Hampton

During her time at Hampton, Wakefield has actively embraced leadership opportunities and campus involvement that have shaped both her professional identity and personal development.

“At Hampton, I have embraced numerous leadership roles and actively engaged in a variety of organizations across campus,” she shares. “Through these experiences, I have grown more confident, more socially aware, and more intentional about building meaningful connections with individuals from diverse backgrounds.”

Her work within the School of Business has helped her build a reputation grounded in merit, reliability, and resourcefulness. Wakefield notes that being someone others can depend on has deepened her sense of accountability and continues to drive her pursuit of excellence.

Notable Roles and Campus Impact

Wakefield currently serves in several influential leadership positions:

  • Executive Vice President, 5-Year MBA Leadership Application Program; supporting program operations and strengthening communication between students and staff
  • Miss Senior, Onyx Class Office
  • Outer Social Co-Chair, SGA Women’s Caucus; leading service initiatives that benefit both Hampton University and the broader Hampton Roads community

She is widely respected by peers and faculty alike for her professionalism, dependability, and commitment to uplifting others.

Building Community Through Campus Involvement

Wakefield’s Hampton experience has been enriched through meaningful organizational involvement. During her first two years, she performed as a Blue Thunder Cheerleader, an experience she credits with teaching her how to balance discipline with fully enjoying the college journey.

Her continued engagement in organizations such as Business Bigs, Women’s Caucus, and Class Office has allowed her to channel her creativity into mentorship, community building, and peer connection.

“Being involved in these organizations has allowed me to use my creativity to connect with others, mentor students, and build community,” she says. “Through these experiences, I’ve formed genuine friendships with people from all over the country that I know will last well beyond graduation.”

Looking Ahead

Wakefield’s goals remain firmly focused on continued academic and professional advancement. She plans to return to Hampton this fall to complete her MBA by 2027. Following graduation, she intends to pursue CPA licensure and begin her full-time career at an accounting firm, an opportunity she secured through relationships built within the School of Business.

Looking forward, she hopes to inspire fellow students to fully embrace the opportunities available to them.

“I hope to see more students fully embrace the opportunities available to them and continue advocating for one another in every space we enter,” Wakefield says.
