Hampton University Honors College

About The Honors College

The Honors College at Hampton University was formally initiated in 1958 to improve the academic atmosphere and equip gifted students with adequate preparation for graduate and professional school.  The development of the Honors College came in 1995 at the helm of Director, Dr. Freddye Sue Turner Davy.  Born in 1933, Dr. Davy grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  She was a 1953 graduate of Philander Smith College and a 1987 Ed. Doctoral graduate from Vanderbilt University. She joined the Hampton University family in 1994 as the Director of the Honors College and served in that role until her death in 2012, making her the longest serving director in the college’s history.  As the architect of the Honors College, Hampton University commemorates Dr. Davy with the naming rights of the Honors College.  The Freddye T. Davy Honors College is currently located in Dubois Hall.
