This is to inform students that Hampton University intends to fully comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. This Act was designated to protect the privacy of educational records, to establish the rights of students to inspect and review their education records and to provide guidelines for the corrections of inaccurate or misleading information and complaints with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Office (FERPA) concerning alleged failures by the institution to comply with the Act. Local policy explains in detail the procedures to be used by the institution for compliance with the provisions of the Act. The policy can be read in the Office of the University Registrar. This office also maintains a directory of record which list all education records maintained on students by this institution.
Hampton University designated the following information as public or directory information. Such information may be disclosed by the institution at its discretion:
name, address, telephone, dates of attendance, previous institution(s)attended, major field of study, awards, honors, (including dean’s list), degree(s) conferred (including dates), past and present participation in officially recognized sports and activities, physical factors (height, weight of athletes), date and place of birth.
Currently enrolled students may withhold disclosure of any category of information under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. To withhold disclosure, please complete the Educational Records/Grade Release Form: FERPA_08-16-24.pdf and email the completed document to registrar@hamptonu.edu. Students may modify and/or rescind the request at any time during their academic tenure at Hampton University.
Hampton University assumes that failure on the part of any student to specifically request the withholding of categories of “Directory Information” indicates individual approval for disclosure.
The student has the right to file a complaint with the U.S Department of education concerning alleged failure of the University to comply with requirement of FERPA.
