Vice President for Research

Dr. Neelam Azad serves as the Vice President for Research at Hampton University (HU), a role she assumed on July 01, 2022. In this position, she oversees HU’s research enterprise and manages units responsible for administration of sponsored projects, research and regulatory compliance, as well as interdisciplinary academic research centers.

Dr. Azad is a native of Mumbai, India where she completed her Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in 2001. She graduated with a doctoral degree in Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences from West Virginia University (WVU), prior to joining HU School of Pharmacy (HUSOP) in 2008 for her first academic appointment. She is a tenured Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at HUSOP and was recently named as an Endowed University Professor of Pharmacy. She possesses a wide range of experiences across many facets of the academic enterprise having served as the Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences for eight years, and briefly as the Assistant Vice President for Research and Director of the Cancer Research Center.

Dr. Azad has secured funding for multiple investigator-initiated research projects, multidisciplinary grants, student training programs, and community outreach projects. Dr. Azad is well-published and has trained several undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research technicians. Throughout her career, Dr. Azad has earned numerous honors, including the inaugural Hampton University President’s Ambassador for Academic Excellence, Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research award from American Association for Cancer Research for three consecutive years, “Professor of the Year” award from the University’s School of Pharmacy for three consecutive years, and the Provost’s Academic Excellence Faculty Award. Dr. Azad is a Leadership Fellow with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Dr. Azad’s focus is on the current and future health of the University’s research enterprise. As part of her strategic initiatives portfolio, she organizes faculty teams on developing new ideas and works with them on securing funding. Dr. Azad is committed to developing interdisciplinary research initiatives and establishing core resources with the goal of strengthening and expanding the research capacity at Hampton University.
