Hampton University, once a vocational school, unveils workforce development enterprise

Hampton University is returning to its vocational roots with the launch of its Virginia Workforce Enterprise.

The venture, focusing on skilled trades, consists of three spaces where community leaders gathered Wednesday to celebrate the launch. The first is a Community Health and Vocational Center on Butler Farm Road, which focuses on training for careers in HVAC, nursing and welding. The other two are suites in the Harbour Centre downtown: one a culinary kitchen and networking center, and the other focused on innovation and entrepreneurship.

President Darrell Williams called the move a “full circle” moment for Hampton University, which started as a vocational institution before transitioning to a university in 1984, more than a century after its founding. He said students, alumni and the broader community will have access to different learning opportunities in addition to its existing higher education programs.
