Internship/cooperative education

Consistent with the expectations of employers and graduate schools, our students are required to complete at least one significant work assignment for academic credit during their tenure at Hampton.

An internship is typically a paid summer experience of two or three months, whereas, a cooperative education experience typically is for six months. These experiences enrich the student’s education by providing relevant perspectives to the theories and techniques covered in the classroom.

Our students who have internships and/or cooperative education experiences are more attractive to employers. The School of Business works closely with the Career Counseling and Planning Center and our corporate partners to enhance the number and quality of these internship and cooperative experiences; however it is the responsibility of the student to secure such an experience.

Through her experience with Southwest Airlines, Kristen gained valuable insight into corporate operations, collaboration, and people-centered systems within a large organization. The James T. George School of Business prepared me for this opportunity by equipping me with strong technical knowledge, communication skills, and a solid foundation in information systems and strategic thinking.

During my summer internship as a Social Media Intern for the Sacramento Kings, my primary focus was on “Gen-Z-ifying” their TikTok, and creating short-form content across their social media platforms. Over the course of 10 weeks, I was honored to have a few of my videos highlighted in the NBA’s content roundup for the overall league, having the opportunity to pitch a potential marketing partnership, and being able to help boost the Kings’ overall TikTok presence.

I interned in the National Procurement Office (NPO), where I assisted with data cleansing and formatting through various projects. I enhanced my presentation skills and proficiency in Excel, including compiling costs and constructing cost baselines for contract negotiations based on past payments. I also gained experience in using Ariba and had the opportunity to learn from members of other departments within the bank.
