Bereavement Services Program (BSP)

The mission of the Bereavement Services Program (BSP) is to provide Hampton students with culturally conscious support that reflects the multifaceted nature of the grieving process. As the central hub for students who have experienced a loss, the BSP will streamline the bereavement response for the Hampton community while enhancing awareness and engagement with grief resources on campus.

Cultural Context

The BSP acknowledges the importance of viewing grief through a cultural lens to provide Hampton students with services that capture their entire experience of loss. From the Antebellum South era when Black Americans grappled with death and loss as a daily occurrence, to the current social justice movements which channel Black Americans’ collective grief to advance political change, it is well documented that grief can be felt on a cultural level. With this consideration, the staff of the BSP are dedicated to ensuring each aspect of the program incorporates culturally relevant practices to honor the historical significance of grief within Black and Brown communities.
