Foreword to Graduate Faculty

Dear Graduate Faculty,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Graduate College at Hampton University. As a graduate faculty member at one of only 13 R2 “High Spending Research and Doctorate Production” Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the country and one of only nine Opportunity Colleges and Universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, you join a community of researchers and scholars committed to expanding research opportunities and to excellence in graduate-level education, mentorship, advisement, and leadership.

This Handbook, prepared by the Graduate College and reviewed by the Graduate Council, is designed for two key audiences: graduate faculty and graduate students. For graduate faculty, it outlines the organizational chart and governing bylaws of the Graduate College, and doubles as an informational resource and reference guide. The Graduate College website and SharePoint site contain additional resources to assist graduate faculty with the many roles they serve at the University.

For graduate students, this Handbook outlines the responsibilities of Hampton University graduate students and the governing bylaws of the Organization of Graduate Students. The Academic Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Research Handbook, and the Graduate College website offer additional resources and important information.

With every best wish,

Scott Challener
Associate Professor of English and Dean of the Graduate College
